yeah, I switched over to MVC for almost all of my projects that have an external XML file (which is about 99%)

http://senocular.com/flash/tutor…
was good enough to learn how to go from 0 to this:
http://sidlee.com- you learned everything from that tutorial?courtesyflush
- or they did?courtesyflush
- Slick bro, I'm gonna tear through this shit real soon. Thanks a ton.dMullins
- yeah thanks for the link!FallowDeer

The problem with lynda.com is you watch the tutorials, then you have to take the time to practice what you just learned. I'm so lazy. The best real way to learn is from a tutor, but they are expensive.
- If you're too lazy to practice, you'll never learn it, haha.rosem
- true, i'm still one level 1epikore
- The only way to really absorb it is to do it. It's not like watching TV.bort
- this is what I was going to say, I watched like 4 chapters and didnt take in a thing! so follow along!FallowDeer

I'm more confused than ever now... zarkonite, are you saying that the entire sidlee site AS knowledge came from the senocular tutorial?
- fuck no, I'm just handing down the same advice I was given when I started AS3..zarkonite

fuck no, I'm just handing down the same advice I was given when I started AS3...
- can you hand me down your own advice?courtesyflush
- seriously, try that tutorial.zarkonite
- I will, if you're seriouscourtesyflush
- I don't know if serious is the right word, I solemnly advise you to follow that tutorial.zarkonite

jQuery is making me love Ajax again and forget about learning AS3, especially as I've seen so many flash projects go randomly sideways with excess

what do you want to do with your actionscript knowledge?
and other languages like Java, C# for Silverlight, AS3, Processing will come pretty easy if you're well versed in one like AS3.
Make sure to learn 3, not 2 because AS3 is a properly organized language that will help your understand programming concepts even if you don't wanna read weird abstract books about programming.

The learning curve for AS3 is steep so it's difficult to find a book that eases you into it.
I suggest videos that walk you through the creation of an application, along with tutorials. Doing that will give you lots of "aha" moments.. and while you may need to review all of the material many times (especially if you're new to programming) but you will eventually learn it.
The great thing about AS3, as said before, is that it is a "proper" programming language.. so that "eventually" won't be out of date by the time you know it.

lynda.com AS3 for designers is the best to get started.

I wish I could kill the fuck who did this to us. I'm sorry, but all euphemisms and "it's going to let us blah blah blah" aside, this is inexcusable. I can't write a button. I can't write a function 95% of the time. I have to remember to import core functionality of the language to get .as files to work? This is my livelihood they've nearly obliterated. I'm beyond angry and I'm ready to get an angry mob with torches to storm the Adobe castle.
- Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. I've been using Flash since 1997 for God's sake.CyBrain

If you know AS2, then learning AS3 will be painful.

Me too, kona! I was seriously thinking about it the other day.
