so much bullshit. i don't understand why they couldn't just leave well enough alone and sell out like any other normal event. they've created a hysteria and a false sense of desperation that drove people to over-order and scalp

I am pretty sure that the burning man lottery has made my decision easier by not selling me a ticket. I guess my 8 year stint since 1999 isn't something they were interested in. No project either. oh well. I guess this year I go somewhere else. I'll miss the QBN meet up for sure the most.
- it's not gonna be the same without you man. there's still a chance though...scarabin
- Hey MarleyMarl, I'll buy that ticket from you!capn_ron
- Send me an email. I have a few interested.MarleyMarl
- kidding. I would never buy them for more than face value. have fun.capn_ron
- Meh, your loss.MarleyMarl
- i here ya ron, they made it easier no doubt. but still hurts. i will definitely be taking a trip somewhere to help sooth the soul.sea_sea

The theme already sucks this year.
Fertility? Get ready to see a lot of pregnant artworks & burners. I'm sure a lot of couples are waiting that week to reproduce so that their kid will have a meaning.- Go rent the 2nd season of True Blood. That way you won't miss a thing.zenmasterfoo
- i was thinking the same thingscarabin
- I know right. I wonder if the blond vampire is going to kill the ginger one? So curious...Beeswax

Amazing. Hard to see how the BM organizers could not have anticipated this outcome from the ticket-selling change.
Oddly though, I wonder if it's some strange experiment this year to bring in a bunch of new blood? You know, 'Fertility'. Not sure how it will work out for them...From the comments in the above BM blog post:

February 1st, 2012 at 9:25 pm"Thinking you can now control the gray market nightmare you created by admonishing the market-forces-that-be to not purchase at above face value is astonishing arrogance. You have no idea what you’re doing to your brand. This will be a Netflix-level case study in what not to do as an organization. In essence, you have turned your advocates into your enemies in one swell foop. This year’s event will be either A) Attended by gawkers looking at a sideshow or B) A sobering and humbling experience for BMorg. You have changed the experience for a significant number of us and recklessly burned the trust that most enterprises would pay to acquire. Shame on your arrogance. Shame on you for solving a ticketing problem with political maneuvering. Shame on you for introducing a scarcity mentality. Shame on you for implementing a complex plan to drive up average ticket pricing earlier in your selling season. Shame on you for not listening to the outrage coming directly from participants and thinking you can centrally manage something that belonged to all of us. Congratulations. You showed us who is boss."

There was a comment on a facebook post that really hit home for me. It was directed at long time burners who did not get tickets this year (ie. ME). It went something like this.
Don't let the event be your only shell of the burning man experience, use this as an opportunity to take your experience to another location and share your love of art and people and music. Go to India, go to Tibet, go anywhere and be the person you are while at Burning Man.
This was pretty profound for me. Actually got me thinking that this may have been the best possible outcome to not actually get a ticket. I am not giving up on the event, there is another sale, albeit only 10K tickets left, but you never know. Really, this is just a nice thought to have other than being pissed at BMORG for whatever they got themselves into with this ticket system.
- I think that this sentiment is part of what the BM organizers might be trying to provoke. Perhaps some long-time burners have gotten to comfortable with coming home and need to "walkabout" a bit.nato

- Freshen the batteries, so to speak.nato
- i agree, last year being my first, i couldn't help but notice the "burner click" going on. almost made a virgin feel not welcome. almost like they seemed stuck in a loop. weird now that you mention it. anyway, i said almost, cause i was home dammit!sea_sea

I dont really get the being pissed thing, If you reeeally wanted a ticket why not apply for 1 at the very first early bird release top tier price weeeks ago? ...I got 4 :P
- yeah unfortunately, 420 wasn't a price most of us can afford for one ticket, and we needed more than one.sea_sea
- blackspade0
Not that I agree with this new lottery shenanigans.
- capn_ron0
It's never been a problem to get tickets. This is all new. It's outgrown it britches. I've never had any issue getting tickets. Not pissed either, just frustrated with the outcome. I know at least 10 people who have been many years and didn't get tickets. I also know of 8 people who have never been who got tickets. It's just the way the lottery went. No biggie. Have fun out there blackspade. It is a magical place.
- blackspade0
You shouldn't give up! I think you'd easily still get a ticket for a decent price? Understand the frustration :/ Will def have fun, only my 2nd burn! :)

Fusion festival in Germany had the same issue a couple years back.. they sold out their tickets way too quickly and everyone complained as their servers couldnt handle the traffic .. 54000 tickets in under 48 hours..
then they changed it to you could only buy 2 tickets per home address..
now this year, they have also gone for the lottery option..
but they have it that you can create "crews" so say you and 10 other friends are wanting to go, you can all register and join a communal crew. if more than 50% of you win in the lottery, they all of you win..its an all or nothing approach..
i guess thats the problem when you have almost double the demand for tickets than you have capacity for.
- not sure if its the same with BM.. but they are printing names on the tickets here to stop scalpingautoflavour
- if you dont want you tickets anymore, they will issue a full refund and they go back into a ticket bingoautoflavour
- capn_ron0
^^^ looks legit ^^^
I'm sure this ticket thing is just a way for the BMorg to make their costumes out of tickets as a huge F-U to people like me.

someone needs to make a video "Shit people who go to Burning Man say..." which would include:
"The tickets are how much this year??!!"
"It's not as good as when I went years ago..."
"You can join our camp!"
"Sorry, we don't have any space in our car"
"I'm going for sure!!"
"Sorry I can't make it this year."
"What's your camp theme?"
"I'm going a two weeks early to set up"
"meet you at center camp"
- seffis0
Yeah, this ticket lottery thing seems like it's become totally problematic. For those of you who think they should've seen it coming, what's your alternate solution that isn't going to cause some other sort of logistical nightmare? I think nothing they would have done would have been significantly better. It's a learning experience, and the real test of whether anything was learned or not will be to see what they do in 2013.
capn_ron, your mentioning about the playa not being your only experience with Burning Man is also important. I think every regional event around the world is growing, and even some of them are beyond capacity every year. The experience has to become more distributed somehow.
That said, Burning Man would not be quite the same without a capn_ron, sea_sea, scarabin, seffis, and hope together at Center Camp. And whatever follows... Keep looking and trying for tickets!
- scarabin0
yeah, regionals are the future.
hopefully we'll have a solid cali burn soon

apparently there's a bunring man subreddit.
