I think she's talking about something like InDesign's preview mode. As far as I know, there is no automatic solution.
I've created a mask on its own, top, locked layer just to get rid of whatever's ouside the art board, but that's just a workaround.

I just use a big old white rectangle with a cutout the size of the artboard. I have this as my topmost layer and dump all my guides in there too.
