Anyone who knows Chicago. If I have a stop over in O'Hare airport for 6 hours is that enough time for me to jump in a cab and go and see some of the city? Or is it miles away and not worth it?
-
Cheers in advance.

Takes about 20 minutes to get into the city via public transport. Cab probably faster.
- version30
if you leave the terminal you'll have to check back in, keep that in mind

depending on what time your plan lands and departs it is definitely enough time. if it's rush hour a cab-ride might be pretty backed up on . look into the blue line. during rush hour 190 - 90 is always a joke. the junction between 190 and 90 is called 'the strangler' for a good reason. lol.

$35 cab ride to and from the city, please keep that in mind.

it's not worth it. you'll be worrying the whole time about making it back for your flight. just head to one of the bars and get pissed.

OK cheers guys, was in two minds considering i will have been on a plane for hours anyway a mad rush might not be in my best interests. I am changing airlines so presume ill want my bag back anyway,

you have time...get a cab, go to Milennium Park. Will take you anywhere from 30-45 minutes.
there you can see the bean, the world's greatest sculpture, the large video fountain, and the skyline. You can spend an hour there, have a beer and a sandwich outside, and head back. will be better than an airport bar.
- This sounds like a great idea.gradiate

Why is Chicago called the Windy City?
In: Chicago [Edit categories]Answer
Chicago was nicknamed the Windy City not for the wind but for the politicians and city boosters who were full of "hot air."The specifics of this are somewhat in contention. Here are a few versions:
Supposedly when we hosted the world fair, the then mayor boasted about it so much we became known as the windy city.
We're the "Windy City" because of the Chicago Tribune. In fact the editor of the Chicago Tribune was trying to promote the city as a summer resort and used the lakes breeze as one of its attractions.
Actually, we were in competition with NYC for the World's Fair (the one Frank Lloyd Wright debuted in) and the NYC papers called the Chicago pols "windy" in their presentations to win the exhibition. And we did.
I forget the exact name of the writer who coined the phrase, but it stems from all the politicians in Chicago. The writer quipped that all the politicians talking was like a big wind blowing through the cities.
I believe that it stems from the political bantering which took place between Chicago and New York over who would host the World's Fair.
Here is a more extended explanation:Popular myth has it that this nickname for the Chicago was coined by Charles Dana, the editor of the New York Sun, in 1893. Chicago was competing with New York to host the 1893 Columbian Exposition and Dana allegedly coined the name as a derogatory moniker. Supposedly the term is not a reference to the winds off Lake Michigan as one might suppose, but rather refers to the Chicagoan habit of rabid boosterism and shameless boasting. To a New Yorker like Dana, Chicago was full of hot air.
The story simply isn't true. The name dates to at least 1885, and clearly refers to the breezes off the lake. 1885 references include "city of winds" as well as "Windy City." This isn't new information either. Mathew's Dictionary of Americanisms, published some 50 years ago, includes an 1887 quotation of "Windy City, but the myth persists--largely due to newspaper reporters and editors who repeat the tale without checking the facts.

Last time I flew through Chicago (aka Shit-cargo), I had a 6 or 7 hr layover. I was traveling from B.Aires to LA via way too many stops so i had a ton of crap to keep me busy at the airports.
inside scoop:
1. Go to the hotel in the airport there, it's a Marriott or something. Talk to the bellman at the desk near the entrance, offer him $10 (or more, but have it in your hand) for him to check your bags for a few hours because you want to check out the city. He's probably be a overly proud Chicagoan (we all are in some fashion) and he'll feel it's his duty to help you out. And chances are he'll do it in a heartbeat b/c no one tips at those hotels, unless you look shady of course.2. Hop on the Blue line, get off at the Damen stop, grab lunch at The Sultan Cafe / Market. The owner is a prick, but the food is delicious. Get the egg pita and a bowl of lentil soup.
3. Get back on the train, head downtown, swing into Millennium Park, the MCA, the new wing of the Art Institute.
4. High-tail it back to the airport.

Check the CTA Blue Line RSS feed to see construction alerts....
http://www.transitchicago.com/rs…
There's construction this weekend, adding about 20 minutes to the CTA trip to the airport while you switch from train to bus, then back to train... not sure when this will be done...
