i second the monster. it's a very versatile bike. i ride in the canyons a lot, sometimes by myself and others with my fiance riding along. i used to commute 20 miles to work in LA traffic a few days a week. it even performs pretty damn well at the track. you can pick up a used S4RS (999cc) for a decent price now that the newer models are out.
plus the sound of the dry clutch is awesome :)

i would also check out the ducati sport 1000, from what i have read it is a little more comfortable for the tall people. all the reviews iv read lately actually were really positive of the 09 ninja, even over the honda cbr 600. The new buell lightning cityx looks promising, it seems to of had some major improvements also. I've been looking in that range also and i realy like what i've read about the ducati 848 but i have yet to test ride any.
