- Since when is "North American Indian" a term on the census?i_monk
- have to say I'm surprised with FrenchGnash
- I'm surprise Canadian is a sub category.pango
- A lot of immigrants (particularly immediately post-WWII) and people with really mixed backgrounds identify as Canadian instead of anything else.i_monk
- Ya I get that. But the about of English instead of Canadian seem unrealistic. I've never met anyone in vancouver who identify as English.pango
- Unless they were born in England.pango
- And Asian didn't even show up as one of the category. Unrealistic.pango
- https://scontent-lga…pango
- It's laughable to pretend Quebec is filled with people who identify as Canadian more than French.zarkonite
- ^ i know, right?Gnash
- I'll bet you that survey was in English only =)zarkonite

I thought that the maple leaf patch canadian travelers had was to show their loyalty and pride, but apparently it started out as a way of saying "i'm not american", which in a way is dissing their powerful and patriotic neighbor.
https://www.reddit.com/r/travel/…
Reminds me of the signs asians had in the US during WWII noting that they aren't japanese.
- this is trueGnash
- Its just logic. When USA is known to have a bad reputation in some places, you better show that you're a nice friendly Canadian.Bennn
- would it be disrespectful (or worse) to display it around indigenous peoples in Canada?sofas
- ^ not until recently. our recent 150 year celebrations were marred with claims of genocideGnash
- when I was living in a hostel in Australian I met many Canadians that tattooed their flags on them and sewed the flag all over their backpacks - to do just thismugwart
- I also met sneaky americans doing the same ;-)mugwart
- guys this is interesting, thankssofas
- nationalism is stupid no matter where you're from.Beeswax
- it's not nationalism, it patriotism.Gnash
- We lived in Asia for years and the reception we got when people realized we aren't American made it worthwhile.i_monk
- It's not on Canadians to fix your reputation.i_monk
- most tourists that come down to MX for the winter season are retired Canadians from "Oil Country" they fucking LOVE trump.moldero
- True, Americans are sticking Canadian flag on their shit for the same reason, avoiding trouble.Bennn
- as if anyone in the US would know what other countries flags were.microkorg
- We had Scottish cab driver who was being kind of a dick until he found out we were Canadian instead of American and he was friendly and talkative as hell.ETM
- And apologized profusely for calling us "Yanks." Said it was akin to if we called him a Brit. Lol. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ETM
- Loyalty... patriotic .....
*Eyes rolling.pango - Canada is China now...robotron3k
- I totally get this, especially in UK/Europe. The difference in personality is night and day when locals learn I'm Canadian. Americans get treated like shit!monNom
- I'm Irish and Canadian. I literally can't lose.Centigrade
- Canada is china? Wat?pango
- "Putting up Canadian flag is a way to dis their patriotic and powerful neighbour...." lol that's why people don't like the impression of American.pango

Canada is extending paid parental leave to 18 months.
https://www.thestar.com/news/can…
Eligible new parents will be able to spread 12 months of employment insurance benefits over 18 months after the birth of a child. Other changes for family caregiver benefits and the option to take maternity benefits 12 weeks before the baby is due will also come into effect on Dec. 3.
- fuuuu ... I get 6 weeksmonospaced
- ^ that's probably your company, not the gov't, yes?Gnash
- yeah, but thats actually good in the us :/
Government gives NOTHINGmonospaced - i don't get it. that sucksGnash
- The 12 month extension though is great so that the father can grab some of that extra time off and not at the expense of the mother's.ETM
- But in the case where the mom may take all 18 months, that does make things a bit harder for the employers filling even larger mat leaves.ETM
- For our American friends, we have laws here that require the employer retain the working position of the person on parental leave so they can return.ETM
- Or pay adequate severance payment to terminate/buy out their position.ETM
- Don't know why , but this reminded me of an American ad I saw, where you get a free AK47 with your car purchasedrgs
- The flip side being that a lot of women use this system as a way to find a new job, few women ever return to their old job causing serious problems for businesszarkonite
- ^ that's true. but usually they stay home longer with the kids before finding a new gigGnash
- I live in Kanada and I never heard of thisBennn
- I hear the gross payout is the same whether 12 or 18 months. So 18mo you are at like 30% salary instead of 45% or whatever it ismonNom
- Yeah the total amount is fixed, you just spread it over more time. Essentially it's a rule change to the duration only.zarkonite
- @Benn yes, but you live in the Quebec bubble :)ETM

- @gnash: which is unfair to the employer and coworkers who have to pay into unemployment to give her a free a vacation... it's this kind of abuse that makeszarkonite
- social programmes fail.zarkonite
- I agree that E.I. gets abused a lot, but I don't think that mat. leave falls into that category, really.Gnash
- Some women may use the opportunity to look into career shifts but I imagine she'd return if the company met her needsGnash

The new laws introduce free prescriptions for people under 25 and offer universal paid sick days, while abolishing the right for workplaces to request the much-maligned doctor's note when taking time off for health reasons.

congrats to our feminist man dem prime minister Justin Trudeau
for changing "all thy sons command" to "all of us command" in Canada's national anthem.Don't mind it actually but what we should really change is "god keep our land" to "we keep our land" which puts the emphasis on us and is more uniting than leaving our fate to supernatural nonsense.
