If you think there’s any city on earth which lacks a large woman who might spit on you, you are sadly mistaken.

I am so over this... As I walked home from work last night, following the walk path on Lake Merritt, seeing the utterly gorgeous scenery around the lake, safe to say, my fondness for this city has been reconciled.

I live in North Oakland. Of all places I have lived in on Earth, this would be my favorite. Weather is wonderful, close to everything, good bars, good food, etc etc etc. Go ahead haters, enjoy yourselves. Oakland rocks.

Oakland sucks. I've tried to like it, but oo much bad shit goes down here. And if you haven't experienced any of it yet, you will at some point.

most of my friends have been robbed at gun point here. I will admit, that is a problem here. People get mugged fairly often, especially in nicer neighborhoods.

A homeless lady tried to spit on my gf in Santa Monica once, she missed by a few inches. I wonder what would have happened if she was successful.

I love / hate Oakland. So much potential, too much crime. Moved to Berkeley but it's generally more conservative than Oakland so I kinda miss it.

what are the good bay area cities? Any recommendations for a guy and his wife and their two small kids? Clean, safe, mildly affordable. (I was looking at craig's list and the housing is insane. 2x higher than the state avg.) I'm hoping to commute to kentfield area, but that whole are is so expensive!
- kentfield area is relatively inexpensive... compare to the city.mpark
- trying to keep the commute under an hour might be too much to ask...Arvizu
- i'm used to midwest first, then central valley second, my threshold is skewed i guess.Arvizu
- really? that makes sense, but it's higher than richmond and oakland it seems, right?Arvizu
- Albany, just north of Berkeley. Some of the best public schools around, and sceneic views of the bay!p-mac

according to the map its safer to go out at night in Oakland than the daytime. Good reason why drunk people rarely get mugged or shot at.

Love/hate relationship with Oakland as well. I'm fortunate to live right next to Lake Merritt, in a huge rent controlled apartment so I can't complain about my immediate surroundings too much, ha. But the backwards city pollitics, the knucklehead locals, the crappy streets, trash, wreckage, etc. are tiresome.
Luckily I'm moving to a developing country in October, so my standard of living will go up a notch ;-)
Here's a great crime tracking site: http://oakland.crimespotting.org…

I was born in Oakland and still live here. If you don't daydream while your outside, you can get by fine. Taking some martial arts classes help to. My next door neighbors and myself collectively know wing chun, jiujitsu, capoeira, judo, kali, and karate. It doesn't stop the violence, but it helps you from being on the wrong side of it.
