Bergman was pretty tight, if you like angst-ridden scenes of Swedes pausing in front of camera. And when working with Sven Nykvist everything looked incredibly dope as well.

Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock and Sidney Lumet are classics.
If you want more recent films (which you shouldn't, because the oldies are usually better) you should check out David Gordon Green. He's a great director, but seems to only put his best effort in when it's a movie he has written himself. Start with George Washington, which is arguably his best. All The Real Girls and Snow Angels are also fantastic.
I'm also a big fan of Noah Baumbach, but more for his writing than directing. There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson is great achievement in directing, see that for sure.
And if you haven't seen Synecdoche, New York by Charlie Kaufman yet, then you're missing out on what is likely the best American film of the decade.

So I got to say Kubrick, Lynch, and Aronofsky are my top 3.
But I see Mann, Nolan, and Tarantino mentioned here. They've each done interesting and entertaining movies, but definitely (IMO) do not belong on a top list.
