When grouping elements into a large image does it make sense to mix in images that will only be used once (i.e. home page ad) with elements that get used throughout (i.e. logo) or should they be separate?

i would keep the logo and other graphics separate to keep the load time down. those will be cached anyway

@7.34
Most people are going to be coming through the home page so they will be downloading all the elements anyway. So is having one http request worth the larger file size if someone were to happen to come in through some other page?

i would think that for sprites you want to keep a bunch of small images in one large file. a logo or a banner are not necessarily very small and would up a master sprite file size needlessly.
also i think the main purpose of sprites would be to have many images that may change continuously and to keep them all in one place so instead of having to upload 30 files to the server everytime you change them you can just upload the one.
just my two cents.
