Ok, I just got back and tested it. Basically you need to set line type scale to 1000 and export as an eps from autocad.

pylon – Is that because layers are forced to merge inside CS3? Maybe try CS2 where layer merging was optional or CS4 where AutoCAD layers are preserved.

Mayo, we've got CADtools. It doesn't interface w/ CAD in anyway. It just adds CAD functionality to Illy; scale, rudimentary isometrics, etc. It's a good plugin, but won't help you in this case. At least the CS3 version, which is what we're running.

hey Mayo this looks interesting

Can be tricky. It also has to do with the way the "line types" are in autocad otherwise you will crappy line segments in anything with a radius. I am fluent in Autocad and use to export frame by frame 3d way before Swift 3D existed.
Tell them to purge the file, export as Autocad 2000 file and to hide before exporting if I remember correctly. They need to also set the line type to like 1 or 1000. I think one of those will smooth out any and all ovals for export.
Good luck

I went through the same thing - got it to open but couldn't modify it as it had thousand of strokes.

I've only worked with flat building plans as dwgs.
If you have CAD I can walk you through turning off layers that might help simplify it, export it as a pdf, then open it in illustrator. I don't know if this would work with 3/4 views though

- Seems like you might have to re-draw. Good thing its not too complexbaseline_shift
- bad thing is there´s 10,000 of these beautiesgung_hoek

- Can't you just SELECT > SAME > STROKE WEIGHT and then change if you've got a lot of them?pylon
- that's the style of the illustrations.mayo
- the prob is that for a curve, they use a million points. When some shapes overlap...mayo
- they "cancel out" and leave a negative space. So the CAD user put a "band aid" to hide itmayo
- Yeah, autoCAD is really into points more than besier curves.pylon

.dwg files? can they send you those. I believe you can get these from autocad, and they open pretty well in Illy
- or pdf.baseline_shift
- Yes, but the line weights tend to go all funny, etc.pylon

what program is the client exporting out of?

have them send you PDF's

the bypass sounds good, dxf import into 3d app > high resolution rasterized output (different files / channels for different layers in illustrator if necessary) > jpg-import into illustrator > vectorize
little tidying up would be expected, maybe basic re-texturing the 3d objects for better export, but should work?

Ah, yes. I've had the same problem. Any time I've had to work with a CAD file it looks like tripe. I'd be curious to hear if anyone has a solution to this one.
- pylon0
Can you take the dxf's and import them to a 3d package instead?
- mayo
Does anyone know of a way to open/import CAD files into Illy without it looking like crap?
A client sent me dxf and wmf files of a metal plate drawn at 3/4 view in CAD but looks-wise we agree it's unusable. However client is trying to avoid me having to redraw these because there will be hundreds of parts that I would have to redraw.
Please and thank you.
