So how long until the whole internet grinds to a halt? A week? Maybe 2?

So did the developers all other word processing software already pay i4i? Or is it since word is so widely used that they are targeting them first?
It seems odd that xml is patented like this.

patent: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/n…
they can sue everyone with that

The patent system is broken. MS just happens to be the one we love to hate... it's not like EVERY wordpressing application out there doesn't work with custom XML schemas.

I wonder how the Canadians will type up their court documents once this injuction goes into effect;)

Ha! This is going to get a laugh from some of the developers I work with. One of our major software packages is a web based Word document generation system that uses XML within Word templates to create large groups of content templates that the Web portion uses.

I'm no Microsoft fan either but "any version of the software that can open custom XML files" is pretty vague and has huge implications. So any software that can open and manipulate an xml document needs a license from I4i now? What about open source?

fuck microsoft and bill gates

Although I am no MS fan, this seems like a bridge too far.
"I4i filed a patent in 1998 that outlined a means for "manipulating the architecture and the content of a document separately from each other" invoking XML as a means allowing users to format text documents."
The problem is probably that some of the judges and patent people are technologically illiterate.
- was kinda my thoughtsShaney
- Not this judge. He apparently used to work as a computer programmer and systems analyst. http://www.txed.usco…IRNlun6

man they're just stealing technologies from all over the place. first bing steals from kayak, now word stealing too. lol.

"In a separate injunction, the court prohibited Microsoft from "selling, offering to sell, and/or importing in or into the United States" any version of the software that can open custom XML files (with file extensions .xml, .docx, or .docm)."

Looks like that is indeed the case, if they don't sort this out in 60 days no MS Word.
