Guys, you're slipping, the most offensive thing about this site is that it is a table! With exactly one cell in it. Such cluelessness has to be governmental.

I always thought most of the victims of the Lockerbie bombing were Canadian and Indian, that's how it seemed to be covered here in Canada.

Apart from the fact that they did the right thing releasing Megrahi if you've been paying any attention to recent Foreign Office statements about dealing with 'terrorism' you'd realise that this is all part of a moderate front the UK is trying to push, in order to defuse radicals.
It increases the UK moral authority (not a phrase I'm particularly comfortable with), and clearly demonstrates a UK split from trans-atlantic policy.
In my mind this is extremely clever on a global political level. It's not about getting in bed with Libyans - we have much less interest in doing that then they do in getting bed with us - and really the only people on the planet outraged about are Americans - with whom this will only ever be a very temporary blip in relations. Whitehall still has the direct phone line to the White House, by saying it was a matter for Edinburgh, but the UK at large gets to show that our rule of law is also compassionate.
Genius bit of maneuvering...

the guy was innocent. watch the documentary "Lockerbie Revisited".

seriously, i can't understand why people are so pissed off about soemthing that is not true.
Libya was NOT behind it. And NO, i am not about conspiracy crap, honestly. Check ALL the facts. Yet too few people do.
Most likely Iran was behind it, hiring Palestinians to do the dirty job.
A retaliation to the US shooting down an Iranian passenger plane by accident in the Persian Gulf some months prior to it.

He'll be dead in 3 months from prostate cancer, what's the difference if he dies in a Scottish jail or dies in a country-sized jail (Libya)?

"Genius bit of maneuvering"
it's a bit of a joke because it is so transparent
Whitehall have been trying to distance themselves from the issue - i.e. "it's scotland's problem". At the same time they have been building stronger trade/diplomatic relations with Libya.
Then after a few days of silence gordon brown comes out and says he is "repulsed" by the welcome that al-Megrahi received. He is repulsed by the welcome but has nothing to say on the release?
why nothing to say on the release?
What pisses me off about this is the explicit assumption that the people of Libya are somehow celebrating the death of a bunch of americans, indians, canadians etc rather than the fact that they are ceelbrating the return of one of their countrymen that they believe was innocent and had suffered a miscarriage of justice?
some people are asking why they didn't wait for the appeal prcess to happen. it was either they thought he would be dead anyway or else there was some fear that the whole case would be undermined and this would lead to widespread revulsion and lead to a greater hatred of the UK and possibly more attacks.
politics is funny sometimes

oh my god I take it none of you have been watching the scottish news fopr the last 3 years eh? the suggestion that this is a scot parliament ddecision is derisable. I'm giving this a massive fucking LOL.
"Most especially after the horrific events of 9/11, the world needs to be reminded that terrorism must be punished and never rewarded. Terrorists must never be shown compassion or mercy, for these people have no respect for human life. The British, who ironically have themselves been victim to numerous acts of terrorism on their own soil, seem to have forgotten. They need a reminder, and protesting by boycotting travel and business with Scotland and the United Kingdom is the best way of doing so."
pardon me but did that plane not fucking plow through an entire scottish town and leave it utterly fucking destroyed??????? open your fucking eyes and think before you post your fucking poison online, you complete and total cunts.

Correct me if I'm wrong (my historical knowledge, like other things, is shit) But haven't the Yanks been supporting the IRA for the last XX years or so? And initially the IRA were (alledgely) initially funded/supported by Gaddafi amongst others

The IRA were established around 1913 - three years before the 1916 rising. The 1916 rising is a massive event in Irish contemporary history... http://www.nli.ie/1916/1916_main…Gaddafi came on the scene in the 1970's when he supplied some arms to the IRA because he sympathised with their campaign against british occupation of Ireland.
He was pissed off at the british for helping the US bomb Libya. One particular attack by the US killed Gaddafi's own adopted daughter and loads of civilians...
