I guess you could check out Neon Genesis Evangelion... if youre into huge fighting robots. They have some cool concepts for a futuristic tokyo, but i never got into the story...

I like the Akira look and feel. Japan in the future, high tech. That sort of stuff.

lots of good stuff listed already. if you are looking for anime series, definitely check out Samurai Champloo (same guy that did Cowboy Bebop). if you're into the longer running series, i'd really recommend One Piece. Great stuff with a lot of humor and heart.
Besides all the previously mentioned, i'd check out Mamoru Hosada's work. He worked with Studio Ghibili on Howl's Moving Castle (interesting story about his involvement btw) but his own work is what you should check out. He's got one out this summer called Summer Wars, which i havent seen but have heard good things. You could probably get The Girl Who Leapt Through Time on NetFlix. Here's one he did with T.Murakami:

Anything by Miyazaki - Spirited Away, Howls Movies Castle, Castle in the Sky. The Full Metal Alchemist series is awesome, as is the Death Note series. You can find Death Note on YouTube I think... the full series. Or Hulu.
