Hey all. I am in the middle of designing a rebrand for a company who works in computer forensics. The logos they are liking are a bit cliche and might be close to other designs..... How do I go about finding out if these logos are not too close in design to other logos? You know, the whole quark vs. scottish arts council?
Thanks!

research as much as you can – Google.com is good for this :)
Seriously, ask the client to give you a list of as many competitors as you can think of. Check out all their sites and see if you are too close. In most countries Trade Marks only apply for the industries they are actually used for.
Or, you can always hire some Intellectual Property Lawyers if the budget runs that far.

exactly. I did that in 04 (during the badge craze) for a friends site, and this is what happens. I dont do logos often, so I would like to find a way to make sure it doesnt happen. Thats why I am paranoid about it.

The foremost issue is whether the logo you design is close to anybody else in their field – their competitors or people they work with. You have to remember that just about everything has been done by now, so go do your research in the same and related fields, then on logopond and logolounge.
