How would you go about creating an an image style similar to that of Action Jackson/ Beverly Hills Cop. A retro style, almost an illustration?

FFS for once there's design related thread.... could you GFY somewhere else?
I's day you need to start on a photo with good contrast light&shadow then work with shadow&light adjustment effect, then play with the burn tool. You should check some "dragan effect" tutorial. even if it's not the effect you want to achieve, there are some part of tutorials which may interest you.

k, definitely will. i did a quick video tutorial of dragan effect on a photo. seemed useful.

kodak filters for photoshop may help a lot as well.. < magazines use them a lot for covers (skin etc.)
