My partner wants a CMS for her site but finds ExpressionEngine a bit initimidating. However wordpress and the like have very poor security track records.
So anyone know a nice, easy to use CMS with good security, ideally template based (i.e. make a new page like this one).

Wordpress and very poor security track records? Hmmm.

WP is for blogging.

This was discussed recently, not much feedback though.

^ Re Unify
Looks nice and is on my list but it is a content editor rather than a content manager, e.g. adding new pages looks like it has to be done externally. OTOH her site is fairly simple and 90% of her requirements are editing of existing pages so ...

I wouldn't recommend spending money on a small commercial CMS - (imo) even if the fee is low, open-source projects are more likely to be actively developed.
I keep meaning to try modx (http://modxcms.com/) .. I'd look into that.
- Have used and liked modx, as user-friendly as a starving rat thoughcomicsans
- Your logic is somewhat questionable, but EE has a free core version that might be suitable.welded
- I think it's pretty logical -> a small shop producing a CMS has a limited amount of staff and their incentive to support you is over once you've made the purchaselukus_W
- you is over once you've made the purchaselukus_W
- You've never used EE, have you? I'm not saying it's be be-all, but your logic doesn't hold up in my experience.welded
- Expression engine isn't a small commercial CMS - it's a large operation.lukus_W

- (you're right though, I haven't used it ... I was mainly referring to the new crop of CMSs produced by small one/two people teams)lukus_W

Just teach her how to use expression engine and set it up neat.

ExpressionEngine is actually pretty simple to use. What you'll want to do is create a new member group with limited admin privileges which will dramatically simplify the control panel for the client and you'll still be able to use the super admin account if you need up update settings or templates or whatever.

Have you tried perch? I have used it on a few sites and its beautiful in its simplicity.

Wordpress. Done.

If you have to "defend your CMS" to a "paranoid IT guy" who keeps saying ___ has "had security issues".... then you may have to end up wasting alot of time and then finally use whatever he wants... and often end up drinking his Microsoft Kool-aid...
EE is nice.. Concrete5 is interesting too....

Textpattern.

I used to use Textpattern a lot. Now most of my builds are with WP. Why? The admin side is far superior to TXP, meaning less time is spent explaining to clients how to do things. Also, WP has a superior plugin library. Textpattern's plugin library isn't bad by any means, but there are some critical plugins that have been left to rot because the developers have moved on.
