I got my first tatoo about a year ago, and had the design for about 6 months... I'm going to get my next one in a few months and have had the design for a year. Take a *long time to think about it. I'm glad I did it, but I'm glad I did the *right thing... also, do the right thing for *you. If you like it, it will look cool. If you want other people to think it's cool, after a few years you'll probably not be so happy.
- 6 months is a good time to hold onto a designautoflavour

will date quickly, also there are way too many small details, in a few years it will be a big black blob on your arm, and will likely resemble some bad tribal gone wrong.
make it bigger.
also are all these items symbolic of something, cause if they are, your taste for syringes and airplanes might change over time.
mostly tho, its way too many small details.
for each tattoo i have, i have had it on the wall in my studio for at least 6 months before i commit it to ink. does give you a lot of time to reflect on if you actually want it.

is this your first design you have done for one? you mention doing it yesterday..

- Leticia?!!?El_Montr0
- i love the subtle 1 at the top. ie number 1 dick suckaautoflavour

- In and of itself, I like the whale/bird design.dog_opus
- yes but you think twitter will be brand strong in 15 years?autoflavour
- That's what I mean: I like the design. I wouldn't put anything on my skin, let alone a brand!dog_opus

I think it's an excellent design, although I don't know how well it would work as a tattoo. I think tattoos are dumb, though, personally.

Is that a syringe in there? lol

as for going to a tattoo artist and getting some flash like everybody else does, seriously, if you want a tattoo for those reasons, you will regret it.
designing your own tattoo is a very liberating experience, just dont rush into it. do lots of designs, make lots of revisions. talk to the tattoo artist, see what they think.
at the bare minimum it should be a 2 month process between first putting pencil to paper (or cursor to screen) and you getting the first stabs of ink into your skin.
think alot about placement also.
forearms can make pretty strong statements, and depending on who you are and what you do, can cause drama work wise etc.
in the end you might not regret the design, but the placement.you can always wear long sleeves if its a problem.. sucks in summer.
- You guys are full of shit. This time last year I bought 24 beers, sat down with my tattoo artist to draw, and the next morning we went to his studio.schjetne
- morning we went to his studio to get it done. Doesn't have to be an overthought decision always.schjetne
- @schjetne, agree. got a tattoo for my 30years birthday, decided to tattoo something while drunk tht night. next week I had it on my skin.dyspl
- I had it on my skin. It's just a tattoo, not a part of your CV, don't try to be clever everytime.dyspl
- not trying to be clever. I have friends with sleeves and while extremely talented, it does make it harderautoflavour
- doesnt have to be over thought at all. problem is you get people who dont think at all.autoflavour
- im sure stupid forehead guy also thought it was awesome at first.autoflavour
- ahahaha, true.
I'ts just to "I'm gonna put everything on my tattoo, and think every bit" which I think is bad.dyspl - bad.dyspl
- i think if you are designing it yourself, you need to have some cooling off period. hell, i dont even send jobs to printautoflavour
- without giving it a day or 2 to sink and feel right..autoflavour
- 7point340
too many small bits and too close together.
likely, the artist will tell you the same.
- dyspl0
I recommand to let the tattoo artist design the tattoo, just a matter of respect.
*I'm not talking about flash tattoos, but real piece or art.
- definitely if you can find a tatlented artist. usually tho, they have very long waiting lists (ie years)autoflavour
- it depends. some good ones have decent waiting list. (the price is much more a problem 4000euros for the complete arm...)dyspl
- *arm.dyspl
- but you rather pay 1000euro for crap. you get what you pay for.autoflavour

dont do it... you will regret it... let the tattoo artist draw it up... tell him your idea and you will get something way better that doesnt look like it came from istock photo... sorry... Im not trying to be mean... just really talk to a good tattoo artist first.

If you love the idea of getting a tattoo, and you want the tattoo to be about things you love, why not get a tattoo of a tattooist tattooing your arm?
I just went meta.

look, this whole tattoo artist knows best line is a bit lame.
tattoo artists can be awesome and can also be very average. the awesome ones usually have waiting lists longer than most people care to wait.
the thing you need to consider is if you want a tattoo artist to do you some work, it will be in what ever style they naturally work in. now the piece you put forward, you will be hard pressed to find ANY tattoo artist who works with vector style hard lines etc.
you can ask them to emulate it for you, but it wont be the same.
if you have some thing very specific in mind, and you have the skills to design it, then you should make it.
if you want something made by someone else in their hand and style, then get your tattoo artist to do it.
but all tattoo artists have strong areas in which they feel comfortable, so if you want a tech neo tribal design, there is no point taking it to a old school or japanese focussed artist.
if you think you can produce something you will be happy with for the rest of your life, design it and take it to the tattoo artist and see what they say regarding color, placement, size.
then go back and change it.
but the notion you will regret it just because a tattoo artist hasnt made it, is complete rubbish.
- You are very passionate about tattooing.Khurram
- no, just everytime anyone asks about tattoos on QBN there are a lot of ignorant answers come outautoflavour
- not so much in this one, but there has been a few occasionsautoflavour
- I rather spend time on finding the "right" tattoist and let him do my idea with his style.dyspl
- absolutely, except the right guy for me has a 27 month waiting list. seriously.autoflavour

"but the notion you will regret it just because a tattoo artist hasnt made it, is complete rubbish."
not what I mean.
Can't spend too much time *work* so, just a little though :
You are bored when someone bring you his own drawing for a logo, cause it's your job to draw it, and secondly you won't be able to put it in your portfolio. conclusion : you spend the minimum time on it, take the money and run.Why would it be different for a tattoist?
- autoflavour0
you are confusing service with creativity.
how is you bringing in your own work any different to the thousands of designs in the flash books on the walls. a very large percent of the people walking thru a tattoo artists door will want off the wall work.
at least with your own designs, its a bit of variety.
you are paying them for a service. see them more like a print shop. you take your work in, they will tell you if the colors are out, etc.. but in the end, they give you what you ask for.
now, if you are very confident in the artists abilities, then sure, get them to design and ink it.
tattoos and logo creation are somewhat different.. while similar in many respects.
client comes in and wants a logo, its your job to know what is good and what will look best.
tattoo client comes in and if they want something specific, its your job to give them what they want.

- you know in 5-10 years time, it will just bleed into one big blob. you would not have pierced deep enoughautoflavour
- so unless your name is blob, its going to look like a growthautoflavour
- I would not have pierced deep enough? LOL. Yeah, aiight mate. What you got agsinst my self-inflicted tat anyway???!!!Khurram
