xbox - xbox live beats ps3online. games are good for both. as far as the ring o death - xbox will fix it for free. as far as a blueray player, yeah, that is nice to have, but the standalone players are getting cheaper and cheaper.

I still play my Dreamcast!
My vote would be for a PS3. True, there are more games available for XBox, some of which are awesome, but then it's been out longer.
After Halo and Gears of War the XBox exclusives tail off a bit, and IMHO the selection contains one too many meathead-with-guns games.
PS3 is actually a better seller than XBox was at the same point in its life. The introduction of the Slim and a price reduction certainly won't buck that trend. And, popular consoles = well supported consoles among game devs.
There are also some solid games coming out for PS3 in the next few months, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 being exclusives that are highly anticipated (including by me) and are likely to live up to it.
Best of all though, it's not Microsoft.

I have at xbox 360 , I have over 30 games and xbox live ,
with that said go with a PS3 , my xbox just got the red rings of death for the 3rd time , if it was not still under warranty I would have traded in all my games towards a ps3 , not to mention everyone I know locally has had the red rings of death , just saying

I've got a PS3 and love it. If I had the money, I'd buy a 360 simply for this game:

Get the 360, I have BOTH, but my PS3 collects dust. There have been quite a few games coming out that show not a lack of power/capability for the PS3, but rather a lack of developer interest – resulting in significantly lower quality version of the same game. If metal gear and uncharted are must plays, get the PS3, if not, everything else will work on an XBOX, and look better most of the time.

With plenty of games being designed for the 360 and ported over to the PS3, it seems like many come with complaints on the PS3 of being slower, or having some issues on account of the port.

Ps3 clearly.

I have 360 and PS3 too and find the reverse is true. But I'd guess majority of cross-platform games have been led by 360 development and ported.
Look at Metacritic's top 10 for each platform. 3 exclusives in each, the rest multi-platform (one of 360's being an XBLA game). GTA4 tops both lists that's been multi-platform from the original top-down version.
You've got to remember the 360 is pretty much a generation of games ahead, in that respect a straight comparison is misleading. It could also mean the 360 will be superceded sooner than the PS3, and remember how Micro$oft COMPLETELY ditched the original XBox.
In terms of exclusives games WipeOut HD, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear, God of War and Drake are more than enough to get my preference.
There have always been hiccups with consoles early in their life, but in the main they have always been a reliable gaming fix. That the 360 has given us the RROD for me is unforgivable.
