Turn K into CMYK?

Printing a small digital run, and my 70%K grey.. or pantone 425C... comes out rubbish. weird texture.
SO while at the printer I tried making a rough estimate with CMYK mixed. It came out WAY better as it's 4 layers of ink not 1.
But how to convert the colour accurately, I wonder?
(not that it matters... it comes out way too dark anyway and I'm gonna have to do a bunch of greys and choose one that looks like proper printed colour)

Trying to print tints of one color ink (C, M, Y or K) can be a crapshoot with digital printing, unless it's very high-end. You'll just have to suck it up and come up with a 1,2,3 or 4-c mix approximating the 70% K. It's the nature of the beast.
