don't usually like touristy things. anything the locals like, i'm into. hoping to bring my bike along and explore while my friends are at work. any fun ideas and/or dive bar recommendations welcome

car.. tried that trip on train.. it was brutal
rent a car, take in that coast

took the train once. didn't think it was bad, but if you have a couple of days to kill then rent a car, there's a ton of cool side stuff to see between the two cities.

thanks! love trips so i was kinda hoping that it'd be worth the drive.
anyone have experience using priceline [or something similar] to book cars? have never booked a car that didn't stay in the same city before.

Car rental. It's a beautiful ride and a great opportunity for stopping for photos.

we took a one way rental from seattle to portland it was excellent trip. really top mexican food from La Tarasca (a crummy little 50's shack on main street) in centralia
then mount st helens for volcanic awesomeness
then thru wine country to the coast

after centralia, get off at chehalis, head out to the coast and follow the coast down to oregon. good times.

yeah! any other must-see stops between seattle-portland or portland-sf... let me know
staying with friends in each city, but most looking forward to the "alone" time exploring in between

I'm originally from Salem, OR, so I mostly know of stuff around there. However In southern oregon, near the border to california there is a place called Rice Hill where you MUST stop for ice cream. It's on the west side of I-5.I don't know if the place has a real name but I think there is a giant burger on the sign and maybe the word EAT or DRIVE IN in big letters.
