i (legitimately) got my hands on a car for the weekend and am hoping to take a small road trip. i've never explored ny outside of the city, anyone have recommendations for some cool areas to check out? preferably within (but not restricted to) the beachy / wildlifey / quirky realm.

Not sure if these are anything like what you might want but if you'd like to bike a trail try the Harlem Valley Rail Trail or if you have kids you might want to visit the Woodstock Animal Sanctuary. And there's Dia Beacon, which is worth a visit if you have not been........

Lots to explore along the Hudson up near the Catskills. A lot of the accommodations fill up in advance though.
