Just been let go last week. Saw it coming and was warned, but owed 40% of a month's salary and have between a slim and nonexistent chance of getting it back.
Shite situation, but on the up side i was looking to leave anyway and was tied in to a 3 month notice period. This way I got to walk away and go for some freelance opportunities that have presented themselves at a few much better agencies.
Whether it works out or not, it's an amazing feeling taking back some control and just shocking the system.
From what I hear out there, there are a lot of opportunities floating around.....

I had a feeling you were on the exit carpet DaveO when you asked a portfolio question a few weeks back.
If you are still owed 40% of a salary, then presumably they are on their uppers. I thought there was a lot of work going on over there.

I see what you mean, when I quit my previous job 2 years ago I had the same feeling; freedom and independence melt with this insecurity state.
Once you tasted that it's a bit difficult to stay employed.... I plan to go back to freelance beginning of 2010 (hopefully better on the money side than last time...)Coming from neighbour studio, I'm sure freelance should turn quite good for you.

There was a fair bit of work to begin with – I helped start the studio from the beginning... but you have one or two big clients and it's a dangerous place to be – they sneeze, you catch a cold.
I actually don't care so much about the money any more, it buys freedom. Suddenly I'm really interested in work again!

...and I'm sure to be starting a 'What the fuck do you do about tax when you're freelance?' thread!!
