Sorry if this is really basic question but I have never had to do it and rarely deal with DNS records etc. I also thought it maybe useful for others that search around here.
I would like to set up subdomain.adance.co.uk
I know I need to adjust A, CNAME and TXT records for the domain adance.co.uk
Currently there is
@---------A---------123.345.567...
Which I believe is the email?
www-----A----------123.345.567.7...
Which I believe is my websiteNow for a sub domain would I have it as
subdmoain. ---CNAME-----123.345.567.789Or something elase?
Thanks for you help

Assuming that the base domain, www, and subdomain share the same IP address:
@ A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
www CNAME @
subdomain CNAME @will set up an A record for your base domain, and CNAMEs for www and subdomain, aliasing them to the base domain.
Alternately, you can also do this:
@ A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
www A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
subdomain A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxto set up A records for the base domain, www, and subdomain.
Additionally, you need to set up MX records to handle email.

Yes that's right. Use A's for sub-domains that are on your domain, and CNAME's to sites that you don't host like a tumblr account.

it seems you're on mediatemple gs? you don't need to do any DNS trickery to get subdomains working, it does it automagically. just create a directory next to the dir for you main domain with the full subdomain including tld, and then put a dir inside there named html, and it'll just work.
- Also, this did not make a lot of sense to me... esp. the last bitDancer

I'm on SS with Mediatemple yes, but my domain is management elsewhere with 123reg.co.uk would this still work?
BTW: acescence I may have some Freelance work if interested?

ooh, ok, you may still have to then. you can set up a wildcard entry though ( *.adance.co.uk ) which will point any and all traffic to mt, where it'll resolve to the proper subdomain on mt's end.
what sort of gig is it? i'm trying to take this week off, but if it's a quick thing i might be interested, email me! thanks!

So a wildcard (*) entry I would set up at 123reg.co.uk and then have a directory named "subdomain.adance.co.uk" in the root (html) folder and that will just ... work?
Freelance gig has no time scales.. will email you with the details.
Cheers

ok, according to 123reg.co.uk, you should already have a wildcard entry, so you should just have to create the dir on your server and you'll be ready to go...

The * A or CNAME is a "wild card" and will be used for subdomains that you have not defined above. The * entry must appear as the last one in the list.
