I might buy a house from my neighbor in an off-market deal. We've been talking about it 'casually' for weeks.
He doesn't want to deal with any of the things like listing his house, talking to banks, realtors, etc. He's fucked up the place six ways from Sunday by starting projects and never finishing them. The house needs a lot of repairs. The guy's a kook, but for all this trouble, I get to buy a house in the center of town for 25% below market. It'd be the only house in this neighborhood I'd ever be able to afford!
The dude is cagey and easily spooked. He's stopped just shy of saying I should write him up an offer... W A N T
- How are you at renovations??eryx
- Nice. Have a chat with a local lawyer so you can be ready moveGnash
- Good way for you both to save some $$. Hopefully you’re handy (or know handy peeps). It can be expensive! I’ve been doing some myself and the $$ adds up.hardhat
- Also, FYI... building materials are crazy expensive right now too. Like ~ double pre pandemic priceshardhat
- Yep, if you aren't handy, it isn't worth it. If you are, awesomelemmy_k
- Higher prices of materials = low key hyper inflationgrafician
- good luck finding time to do all the work yourself, let alone the help to get it done rightmonospaced
- No kidding, mono. I had to learn how to do most of the work because I couldn't get people to show up to do the work.lemmy_k
- Sounds like it could be a sweet deal. But just in case, pay for a home inspection to see what you are getting yourself into.monNom
- I learned to do some, but so much crap you need another set of hands for! Even hanging a ceiling fixture or basic framing or unloading.monospaced
- That 'lots of repairs' might cost you more in the end than a house down the street in good repair.monNom
- i read you might buy a horse from your neighbor. I read it the 2nd time and now I'm disappointed.pango
- I'm fairly handy. I could learn to do a lot. There's a local group that lends tools. Our local energy company subsidizes a lot of upgrades.sarahfailin
- I'm still waiting for him to ask me to write up the offer. We're texting though... It's a lot like dating. Trying to get to HOME!sarahfailin
- I think it’s an awesome project. I love doing this sort of work. Just expect to take a lot longer than you’re anticipating. That’s my exp in EVERY case.hardhat
- Don’t hesitate. Do itGnash
- When you buy it, all problems are yours. If there is anything major like electrics or walls taken out there could be issues. Without a full survey ...comicsans
- I doubt any insurance company would cover it. I would also get a builder to look it over. Honestly don't - fixer uppers are not for amateurs. Or offer 50%comicsans

- got one for the kids while my 2014 iMac was being repaired, so good and so quiet and never heats up. Some of the Adobe Creative suite apps weren't quite_niko
- there yet but will be soon. Highly recommend it._niko
- You still use your imac or y o u traded with your kids?oey_oey
- Yeah still use the iMac mainly because of the monitor but I do sneakily use their mini when they’re not using it hehe_niko

Apologies for the DM link, but it doesn't much change that I WANT this. Oh well, in another lifetime, perhaps.

Last night, I had a dream that I posted in the QBN 'Want of the day' thread. It's bizarre, I know.
Now, I am not so sure anymore, if this would belong in the 'Useful thread' or the 'Toilet of the Day thread', maybe even the 'Million Dollar Ideas' thread (if you install it in cars on the shotgun seat).
I am talking about: Incineration Toilets
- I like this but energy consumption per incineration: 0,8 - 2 kWh WTF is this a turd crematorium?sted
- Yes, it is. That's the amazing part. It burns your poo and pee. So weird.SimonFFM
- they've planted some roquette in the poop ashkingsteven
- if you prioritised the roughage int he first place your body would produce pellets that could be naturally dispatched like skipping stones across the lake, factkingsteven
- I have one at the summer cabin. It sure beats handling numerous buckets of poo every summer.lnu
