2 second comments:
-grid seems to break down on the right
-somethings look a bit too tight (area/year boxes) and some too loose (get in touch content)
- armsbottomer0
i was afraid of that. i was thinking of tightening up the right section. is that tight->loose transition screwing up the grid?
are there good resources anyone can recommend on generating grids for web layouts?

http://www.thegridsystem.org/ has a lot of good links
- sweet, thanks. as can clearly be seen ^ properly using grids is still quite foreign to me.armsbottomer

Personally I'm not a fan of the background behind the "Hello" and "get in touch" parts. When the whole layout is that tight I find it overwhelming the work thumbs a bit too much.

Add some space to things, it all seems so cramped.

Looks like every other 'Hello I'm a web designer' website out there. Try something a bit different maybe

boxy.
- boxy = bad?armsbottomer
- either try getting rid of the boxes altogether and see what happens, or make it even boxier.johndiggity

Not tight.
'Get in touch' red shout / entire red column - clumsy.
More in your text - headers need more ceiling.
- 'more space in your text' evendetritus
- can you describe the where you'd "move in text" and adding ceiling?armsbottomer

The spacing needs to be consistent.
eg. space between the white rectangle and red rectangle is different to the two photo/folio areas, and the Post links make that spacing different again.
Why have two areas for phone and email?

I do like your design, but it kind of looks like a blog template.

If you line up the info in your header (the black thing) and the grey boxes to the rest of the design it will look a lot tighter

If it's a portfolio, make it just a portfolio. Make your very best piece of work the focus of the home page, and polish the shit out of the presentation.
make another website for your blog.

I really don't like the + in front of headers. Otherwise, looks ok!

Sweet phone number btw! You're very lucky!

Your spacing, margins, gutters, columns are massively in consistent. All measurements should be relative. Sort your gird out first and work from there.

I actually like the general look, but as others here have said, you really need to keep your spacing consistent and stick to the grid, if that's the approach you're taking. I found these articles by Mark Boulton really helpful when learning about grid systems:
