    Hi guys,

I just uploaded a new version of http://replete.nu . No content yet, just contact details.

The type looks great in OSX (FF3.5, Safari, Chrome) using 'Hoefler Text' typeface.

In Windows, the type-rendering is mostly crap (too thin, jagged on vertical axis - seems like it's cleartype crap) and the nearest alternative to Hoefler Text is Palatino.

Palatino isn't too bad as an alternative, but the type is important to me - so can anyone recommend a face closer to Hoefler Text thats embeddable on the web by @font-face?

Also, feel free to crit my work (design, html, css etc), though I haven't put the main sections or content up yet.

    Thanks.

what is there to critique outside of a bit of sifr and... nothing?

    • I'm asking for alternate typeface recommendations for Hoefler Text. The crit was an aside (interested in what people think, even at this early stage).Mojo
    • k... but... there's nothing to look at or think about... put more online... give me something to browse - else... *yawn ;)PonyBoy
    • Also, I haven't used sIFR. I've used @font-face CSS font embedding.Mojo
    • Anyway, the point is that I'm asking for typeface recommendations from people who have used @font-face.

    • :) regardless of what you used... you put up a 1/4 page of nothing and announced your type 'looks great'...PonyBoy
    • ... truth is that there's nothing to really critique here... build out the site then ask for thoughts.PonyBoy
    • the font takes it's time loading too... and it's not that pretty as large as it is... (just my opinion... take it as you want.)PonyBoy
    • Are you on Windows or mac? I think it looks quite nice in OSX (using Hoefler) but rubbish in Windows.Mojo
    • osx... same browsers too... it renders rather cleanly (it's pretty... no doubt about it) - I guess... i just wasn't...PonyBoy
    • ... understanding what you were looking for as far as a critique initially :) the hoef. font renders very nicely indeed. :)PonyBoy
    • ..but you think the typefaces don't look good together?Mojo

I'm not using sIFR for this project because it isn't really appropriate for body copy on content-heavy sites.

Font embedding is preferable to <canvas> or Flash-based type replacement technologies. There are many benefits to using @font-face rather than one of the standard replacement technologies.

@PonyBoy - I guess I didn't explain myself well enough. I'm using two fonts on the above site. One is embedded by @font-face (the larger face), the other is Hoefler Text (a font built-in to OSX). The problem is, that if someone doesn't have Hoefler Text on their systems (ie, almost every Windows user), it will display in Palatino (the font stack degrades to next font in the list).

My primary concern is finding alternative typefaces to Hoefler Text that can be embedded on a website (there are licensing issues) using @font-face, because Palatino i

I mentioned critique because I value well-reasoned opinions. But, you are right, there isn't much content there (yet), but still plenty to critique in terms of technical execution.

There must be some web type geeks here on QBN?
