This should really have it's own thread...
Fun idea and I'd love one - though I don't see it being very successful or even very useful? Thinking this is just nerd hive mind at it's finest. The last thing people need is another cheap box that plugs into the TV and can play indie apps, which really is what this is.

The Use will present itself once the hackers get a hold of it: Suddenly you don't need to buy an Xbox 720, PS4, and a Wii: this will play all of those disks (illegally, but it will all the same).
- nope, a 99 dollar console won't be able to play next-gen console gamesernexbcn
- Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Especially with only a gig of ram and a tegra 3, quad core or not.ETM
- Upgrades, how do they work?i_monk
- pirating can fuck off.inteliboy
- Motherboards and chip sockets, how do they work? Tegras are mobile processors. Powerful, but I doubt nowhere to where next gen will be.ETM
- the next gen consoles will be.ETM
- "upgrades" HAHAHAHA you're missing the point of a consoleanimatedgif

What will make this console a notch above would be some sort of equivalent to Airplay or what the Wii U is doing. If it was possible to push the game from you Android phone or tablet and pick up right where you left off, would be amazing. Think of a game like Infinity Blade. You're playing on the train home, the controls are frustrating you (as they do) and you can't get past a point. Get home, push it to the OUYA, grab a real control and your HD TV and move it along.
BTW, Epic games has said that Infinity Blade was the most total profitable game ever, in terms of percentages to cost in vs. profit.
Imagine as a developer, you could still create that game for mobile, have a new and overlapping audience with the OUYA, and even offer exclusive DLC for OUYA owners that takes better advantage of the console setup.
- I suppose also like what the Vita and PS3 can do. But with a far lower barrier to entry.ETM
- and a huge backing. It's not next gen.. it's this gen.. xbox was released in 2005 ffsNaygon
- This has the ability to run all those games. They just need the optimization.. or better yet the onLive aproachNaygon
- www.OnLive.com with this? If you haven't tried check it.Naygon

8:43 pm MST and they are now at $1,816,216, almost double, in one day, what they hoped to get in a month.

Back on games, anyone played/playing Spec-Ops The Line?
Demo was uninspiring, another me-too military cover shooter but it's getting some intriguing write-ups. Apparently gets quite deep (for the genre) and attempts to question morality etc, later on...
- computer AI looks.....poorcruddlebub
- There's nothing interesting about this genre.i_monk
- animatedgif0
^ Tries a bit too hard to make you question morality and doesn't actually give you an option.
It's hard to feel bad about killing civs if I wasn't even giving the chance not to.

Ouya is just shy of $5 million, with 22 days to go.

New cutscene. Meet Bill.
- Are they making a point of never showing the fungus monsters, or have I missed some videos?i_monk
- the first video?cruddlebub

"The reality of the OUYA console doesn’t match the hype: why you should be skeptical"
- i think it's a good idea. just not a console killer that the press says it is.plash
- If it cost $99 compared to the $200-$300, how could you expect it to be more? It will be different, that's the only guarantee.albums
- guaranteealbums
- Who said it was going to kill anything?i_monk
- It's not even the same market segment as console game machines.ETM
- Also many jump on the short timeline. It's just Android phone hardware in a box rather than a smartphone. It's not crazy ambitious.ETM
- crazy ambitious. Then basically add a skin over Android for their UI. The case and control design is the largest thing.ETM
- And neither the case nor controller are actually designed yet.
What a jokeanimatedgif

It's going to do what Apple TV should already be doing with iOS games. It's a different segment and will appeal to more casual gamers in addition to dedicated gamers, like tablet/phone gaming does. It's not an Xbox, PS3 or even Wii competitor in the same way that a mobile game isn't competing with PC gaming.
With Google Play etc. it will be a unique competitor to the AppleTV and although not up to par with iTunes, provides competition to Apple to keep Apple moving and staying ahead, and it's a better push to the living room than Google's miserable attempt with GoogleTV.
- I'm supportive as I feel so many tech segments are stagnating and I would like to see something new.ETM
- i don't think it's that big of a deal.plash
- I'm with plash, MS and Sony already have game stores on their consoles to buy gamesernexbcn
- I can't play my Xbox Arcade games on the bus ride home and then pick them up on my couch if I wanted, or vice versa.ETM
- By couch I mean with big screen HD TV and a proper controller.ETM

Final Build of iCEnhancer for GTA4 to drop later today!

Sony's bought Gaikai which also makes things interesting.

I'm sure Apple and Google can resolve the platform, but neither one is exactly a AAA game publisher or developer. Much as I love throwing birds at pigs I don't want to give up on the 'big' titles that the consoles bring...- Another person acting like it's an 'or' decision rather than an 'and' decision.ETM
- They could buy an AAA pub/dev each and solve that problem.i_monk
- Solve what. I won't be foregoing my Xbox or PS3 for one of these. It's an additional component.ETM
- You won't, but plenty of people do buy every console, and Apple and Google also have rabid fanboys who would just for the sake of it.i_monk
- sake of it.i_monk
- And those people may not overlap the console market, thus opening a new stream.ETM
- Some won't, but I bet most will.i_monk

^ I don't know what it's like in the US, but this whole everything-on-the-cloud everything-streaming approach to content is not exactly great when you have a shit slow and capped data plan.
- What's it like in AUS? Here (Canada) I get 50 down/ 5 up stream with 400gb cap for $60 month.ETM
- For $110/month I could get 250 down/15 up and 1TB a month.ETM
- I have FTTH 100/10 with no caps for 73 dollars @ Barcelona, Spain.ernexbcn
- Crappy in Aus, still mostly capped and $$$ despite claiming otherwise.MrT
- MrT0
@ETM I don't think you can assume that cloud gaming and these new platforms will be selling to a new audience and won't impact on console gaming. Nor will everyone be able to do as you say, and just find more time and money for new platforms while continuing to spend on releases for multiple consoles.
AAA big game dev is hardly healthy with fewer making the profits required and plenty shutting down. I can't imagine that will improve when the number of consoles and gaming platforms increases, can you?
- The fact that mobile gaming has become what it has contradicts your point.ETM
- That said, it would likely compete for existing mobile device time. Use the tv rather than your tablet while at home.ETM
- Also quality AAA titles make bank. Gears of War, EA Sports franchises, Modern Warfare.ETM
- But like the movie industry, you bet the bank on the high budget that doesn't pay off, you often shut the doors.ETM
- To me that means the industry is matured, not troubled. Now you make fewer big budget titles, and indie studios make smaller creative games.ETM
- smaller, more creative projects needing a real hook for attention. Something we see already and great stuff coming out of that community.ETM
- out that gets a marketing channel through things like App store, Live Arcade and maybe this OUYA.ETM
- Regardless, I enjoy this debate. Maybe the thing will turn out to be vaporware.ETM
- Yeah me too, and I applaud your 8 note reply! I'm seeing all the 'traditional' dev closures as all bad...MrT
- but it's also a clear out. For every Gears of War there's a Prototype 2 - well received but dev closed down.MrT
- MrT0
But there's no need to worry...
