Now that the question has been answered I would like to formulate another one, that is kinda related..
How do I format an external drive so it can be read by windows pcs as well as macs?
is it "journaled"?

My WDs came with software but it's for administration, nothing to do with the disc format itself. I never use it, except if needed to set up RAID.

I have two external WD NAS drives that I use on my mbp. The software was for PC but I do use the app that WD has that's online. I access it through Bonjour and use it to configure passwords and other user accounts, not for automatic backups or stuff like that (use TimeMachine for that). Time machine also hooks up to it separately. What's also neat is the ability to access the drives remotely, another thing you'd need to setup through WD's online app. I'm not sure if any of that is even possible without using their software/app.
