Can a backpack still be fashionable or should I go with the traditional shoulder strap of a messenger bag? A backpack is more convenient for me, but I'm also fashionable suave.

Briefcase.

Backpacks can be fashionable, but I'm a messenger bag kinda guy.

I would ask this pondering question ... do you ride a bike or walk?
=P
- if he is an average human, my guess is he can do bothMeeklo

Backpacks look terrible and you look like a total bellend when you get on a cramped bus and push it into people while you turn. Like that twat this morning- <monospaced
- hahaha, so true. although my messenger bag gets in the way during busy times on public transit as welllvl_13

I actually got into a argument this morning with a tubby.

Messenger bags are easier to access while you're on-the-go. Beats the hell out of removing the backpack just to grab a piece of paper or something. Also, backpack shoulder straps can wrinkle nice clothes (suit jacket, for example) faster than a messenger bag.

Backpacks are for high school kids. Messenger bags are for hipsters and college douches. Briefcases are for adults. Get one with a strap. Your welcome. Just my view from the top.

Also how much stuff are you carrying? A nice-fitting backpack (i.e. secured relatively tight to the body) can work since you won't have the problem bigdog mentioned and it can work quite well with the right attire. It's much harder to pull off a good look though than with a messenger bag.

this one is both - http://store.apple.com/us/produc…
i have one, functions well, though it's not the best looking.
- this is a great pack.. however the flap is a lil oversized.e-pill

or get something in-between -- a sling pack.
I just this graphite one from InCase>
http://www.goincase.com/products…- i used to make tech bags like this.. and i will say, this is a gimmick bag.. dont buy it.e-pill
- the use of that big plastic buckle and the over the counter zipper pulls.. mehe-pill
- made with generic 420d nylon or some ballistic nylon with molded eva construction..e-pill
- the top handle can use some beffing up.. its an ok bag for a girl..or a skinny hipster boy..e-pill
- Errr.already bought it E. I like it but there's also a very good possibility that I'm unfashionable. lol.fyoucher1
- oh i have this bag in black and all grey.. but i needed it for design reasons..e-pill
- my ex boss uses this case.. while wearing a business suit.. he was funny looking!!e-pill
- I have the prior version of that bag. It was shorter and had better proportions before. I've used it for 5 years and it's been great.Josev
- great. I prefer it to my briefcases and messenger bags.Josev
- do you prefer it because of the hands-free usage??e-pill
- as the briefcase or messenger needs to be hand carried.. is that why?e-pill
- yes, I prefer that it's hands free, I like the size -- smaller than a backpack, and I feel like it's more secure on me with the way it wraps around my body.Josev
- way it wraps around my body. Maybe that's not true given that the latch is plastic.Josev
- being plastic doesnt mean cheap, it just means less designed..e-pill
- a logo can be placed on anything.. such as they have done..e-pill
- its the stitching and the construction you should be concerned with..e-pill
- incase makes a pretty solid bag.. slightly smaller than most.. serves function more.e-pill
- I don't think it's cheap, but I do wonder if someone tried to grab my bag if the latch would hold. Someone tried to grab my messenger bag 6 years ago (with my powerbook) so I like how the sling pack is wrapped around my torso.Josev
- messenger bag 6 years ago (with my powerbook) so I like how the sling pak is wrapped around my torso.Josev
- the plastic will hold, again its the stitches that hold that piece to the pack..e-pill
- you can if you are worried get that area snapped with a rivet at your local shoe repair shope-pill
- for re-enforcing and protection in the stress area of the buckle.e-pill
- otherwise it is an over sized wide plastic buckle held byt wide p/p webbing.. its solid.e-pill
- but a blade can cut thru it easy peasy..e-pill

Backpacks are practical - but are probably not likely to be fashionable. I think they're the best if you're cycling from one place to another - like biggestdog said, they're bad for public transport.
Although I sound like a bit of an idiot saying it; messenger bags are very 90s. I think their time has come and gone.
If you want to be fashionable, I think you need either a briefcase, a satchel or a man-bag.

I've got one of these and it does the job -> can expand to be much larger when you need it to .. but you end up feeling like a bit of an idiot when it's full up due to it's depth.
- lukus_W0
- yeah def not fashionableinkpink
- its funny but does anyone know what the bungee on the face of the bag is for?e-pill
- as a bag designer we know the general public has no idea what its usage is for..e-pill
- wondering what the design community thinks what its usage is?e-pill
- bungee is for stuffing shit in, traditionally a helmet, not really big enough on this baginkpink
- it's pretty ugly - but it works well as a bag. the bungy can be pretty handy, I've used it for jackets in the summer, newspapers - heard it's also meant for cycle helmets.lukus_W
- newspapers - heard it's also meant for cycle helmets.lukus_W
- helmuts you say.. did you ever measure a helmut?? and then measure that bungee area??e-pill
- the reality is that most bag designers themselves dont know what its usage is for..e-pill
- a helmut would never fit in that tiny space.. it is really a eye catcher to the consumer.e-pill
- i dunno might fit - or a water bottle maybe??lukus_W
- it will catch your eye when your shopping for a bag.. its a visual gimmick.. nothing more.e-pill
- it has come in useful when I'm on a bike .. get to stash stuff on the go.lukus_W
- as a bag designer i hate to use anything that serves no functionality or purpose..e-pill
- there is 2 side water bottle pockets on this pack as it is..e-pill
- not saying that its not used.. just saying its purpose is never used for what its for.e-pill
- this is a great bag.. for the consumer, however the price is not..e-pill
- it absolutely is for stuffing helmet and climbing gear... long before backpacks became street fashioninkpink
- i assume this bag retails for $79.99 if not more.. the cost on this is around $13.50e-pill
- yeah, I can totally see what you meanlukus_W
- probably even less, maybe $11-12 .. so think of that markup price you are shelling out for this.. under $20 pack!e-pill
- the lil loop under the front center pocket is for climbing gear..e-pill
- in an urban environment this serves no purpose other than an additional carry handle..e-pill
- i love to see features like that used for urban markets.. it feels soo displaced..e-pill
- epill sorry i live in backpack land vancouver bc and i can tell you that all these features serve a purpose in backcountryinkpink
- backpack manufacturers here have been using these same features since the 70'sinkpink
- when a parent is shopping for their kids and see this pack they see that extra carry strap.e-pill
- they then buy it.. they see the front bungee and see their kids using it.. they buy it!!e-pill
- i love it!! parents are stupid!!
haha!!!e-pill - inkpink yes in backpack country these feature server very specific identities.e-pill
- however the larger market for the packs is not backpack country as it is urban setting.e-pill
- the usage of these features will never be used for their intended directions.e-pill
- this is why as a backpack designer myself [last 14 years] i laugh when i see its misuse.e-pill
- also this pack is not designed or intended for the backpack country... its for urban marketse-pill
- this pack has the features similar to those used for hiking, mountain climbing etc..e-pill
- those features are dummied down and re-designed to mimmic the looks...e-pill
- ...of their counter parts that are made for that environment. the bungee on this face isnt for anything..e-pill
- this is the big joke in the bag community.. make gimmicks and it will sell..e-pill
- this is one of NorthFace's top selling pack.. and for a reason..e-pill
- its a great bag.. with features that are nopt intended for that reality usage..e-pill
- this doesnt mean you can use it for any usage.. just use it at your own risk..e-pill
- another huge gimmick on this pack is the secondary top front drop pocket.e-pill
- this pocket has water proof zippers, yet the pack itself is not water proof..e-pill
- the usage of that zipper will bring the price of the bag a lot!!e-pill
- you take out that zipper.. make it a regular one.. and the price drops to its cost pricee-pill
- northface uses this gimmick for their urban markets retail marketing. they do it wel!!e-pill
- Jesus. =)elahon
- so what do you do e-pill?
:)Meeklo - That's great to carry tripod.ItalianStallion
- what? you guys don't carry your crampons and ice axe with you on the train? what if it get's icy?monNom
- meeklo i work for small manufactures in the mass market.. i make cheap bags..e-pill
- the style of the brands i work for are have lower price point retails.e-pill
- i am usually given a high priced marked up suped up bpack like this...e-pill
- i have to then cheapen its function but still retain the look..e-pill
- i understand the breakdown of a product and know how to price it out n make it saleablee-pill
- thats what i do.. love me or hate me.. i dont care anymore...e-pill
- e-pill0
omg... vitamins.. its function over fashion... this isnt handbags where its fashion over function..
messengers, backpacks and the likes are made and designed well in the price range i assume you are looking within to be made really of either poly or nylons.. nothing overtly special.. nothing that will last..
the usage of what you need is strictly function.. so stop looking at fashion and go find the pack that works towards your needs..
or go for a fashion styled backpack/ messenger that has crappy hardware and and small compartments as fashion for that style bag is designed to be smaller..
use the bag for your needs not for your style.. its an accessory not an apparel..
- e-pill0
you can also go for a hybrid.. a backpack/ messenger/ duffle all in one..
