^ It is a compelling character study. I'm never quite sure what to make of him. For one, he's not an adrenalin junky. He does his job so "matter of factly", without bravado. For two, he IS emotionally effected by it, disturbed and saddened, i.e. the little boy bomb, and the d00d from whom he cannot remove the suicide belt and he screams "i'm sorry!" and runs. It's not like he's a cold-hearted machine.
I think here, without getting too all Newsnight Review about it, you have to reflect on what sort of personality would actually do this kind of job. Cos IED's and suicide bombs etc, is all we really hear about the Iraq war, and thats was the overriding experience of the war in Iraq (not so much in Afghanistan). And i found it compelling to have to journey through THAT experience through the eyes/mind of a guy like him. And be all like "yeah, i've done 863 bombs, it's mundane and routine," like you're numb. But then it's like "holy fuck! This is insanity!"
I think the clear parallel is the bomb disposal guy at the beginning, who gets wasted. He's cautious. He's wary. He' "by-the-book" professional. And ultimately, it's meaningless. He's dead anyway. And then you're taken on this journey with the character whose all let "well fuck it, we're all gonna die anyway." And i felt like emotionally giving in to him and his "way" and at the same time, "no wait! self-preservation!"
And the ending is fantastic.Cos it is the real rhythm of the lives of these soldiers. They do go on rotation. And when you're job is like that - how the hell can you cope with the emotional/psychological stress of knowing that, however great and "all american" you're typical family life is, - tomorrow you're going back to it. 365 days till the next rotation. What sort of person would you have to be to take THAT in your stride? And you'd have to be like him. You can't get attached to your life.

Ahh, the beauty of watching movies then gathering on the interwebz to discuss them ... all of us offering our 2 cents about how good or bad something was. BoneCrusher, you thought the character study was great; I thought it was regurgitated and generic. However, I see that we both agree about the weak plot.
- ??> what would be a "strong" plot to you??Khurram
- that's a great question Khurram. I'm like a shitty client I guess: "I'll know it when I see it" :PPoint5
- maybe heavy fiction that keeps me guessing ... I'm not sure. Hurt Locker just seemed so predictable at times.Point5
- I think for you it would involve one man’s quest for justiceKhurram
- with a twist at the end. (PS, it was the government all along, they had a secret agreement with the cartels)Khurram

was alright...
... watched it for the first time last night - I got up... wandered around... played with the dog... pee'd a few times... ummmm... made some food...
... didn't miss a beat of it... meaning: not too difficult to follow... and not that engaging a story...
... it was kinda boring to be honest... not sure why it got 'best picture'... maybe it could have gotten 'best bomb suit' or 'best military haircuts on white guys'... but outside of that... not a 'best' anything really... :(

Need more Keanu.

Exactly Khurram.
If I was defusing a bomb, I'd be like, "woah".

I'd prefer to watch any episode of Generation Kill again over that film.
It was enjoyable but really said nothing to me. And I think I've already forgotten what it was about.

I found this movie to be good, but not great. I really have no idea why the media has been raving about it.

other than a couple of intense scenes I felt very underwhelmed by this movie.

I finally got to watch this. And I have to say it was terrible. Not just underwhelming. Bad.
2 hours of cliche plot, cliche characters, cliche one-liners. It was almost such a lampoon of Iraq war movies, that it started to become comical.Wow, how did this get nominated for all those Oscars. I mean c'mon, I guess Point Break should have won Best Picture then.
- Point Break is much better than this movie though.CygnusZero4

It was good, some of the scenes were beautifully put together, but I didn't leave it thinking "Wow, that's the best film in ..." (I saw it long before any hype, just happened to rent it at the $1 dvd kiosk without a clue what it was).

I really liked this film. I don't quite see what the awards hype is all about, it didn't seem very revolutionary but all the same I really enjoyed it. I thought that the characters were very well developed and the cinematography was beautiful. I got to watch it with my brother who was an Air Force EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) until 2007, so it was really interesting in that regard too.

it was ok. some good things in it. i kept feeling like it was kind of routine, you know? he was crazy, his partners were afraid of him but had grudging respect...he was tortured....like i had seen it before, at least the story. he went home, it was drudge shopping for cereal, etc....
i mean, its not like i was in war...but it felt a little by the numbers...
- i know what you mean. i think the pacing of the story let your mind wander sometimes.SteveJobs
