I'm creating a header for an educational site whose goal for their program is to "combine classroom, community, and art activities to encourage kids to explore their connection to the environment in creative and conscientious ways." Target audience 5-8 grade (10-15yrs.)
I've been receiving feedback that I'm not hitting the target audience, and if anyone has experience with hitting that audience I would appreciate feedback on my work.
The latest version is the cartoons.

true, yours is almost preschool

Use other lifestyle elements to build the persona out... like clothes or electronics, etc.

- nope. 2, 3 years shortbrandelec

I like the teen choice reference for style. I can see how it would be difficult to get pre-teens interested while keeping a focus on environment and education
It's interesting how much that age group has changed. Seems like they're maturing so much younger now. Either I'm getting old, or it's COTD's fault.

hold up let me go to the dungeon and ask them real quick

just design as you would think for 18-24 year olds, and the 10-15 group will love it.

you're playing it too safe and seem worried about hitting 10 year old rather than range it to 15 year olds. think about it, that's high school. and those 10 year olds are going to be in high school in a couple of years.

I was asked to do a presentation to middle schoolers (12-14yr olds) on how to use weebly
they picked it up in no time , they are at an age that they are trying to be taken seriously , so just a clean look I would skirt away from any "kid" concepts and just make it look user friendly and non overwhelming

perhaps think more how this age group use technology and identify socially through fashion rather than "environment" which basically = trees and water rather than something cool and relevant

Yeh, the first header was aimed to be more mature and environmental- but they asked for more kid-friendly. So that's where I'm at.
Thanks for the input.

Watch the Disney Channel at night. My son sometimes watches it, I believe that age group is over cartoons and illos, and more about 'what looks cool'.
I would check Jonas, Hanna Montana, Wizards ..., Zack & Cody... I'm basing this on kids I know more or less in that range who watch these things...

You should never hit a 5th grader!
