There is no evidence that ecstasy causes brain damage, according to one of the largest studies into the effects of the drug. Too many previous studies made over-arching conclusions from insufficient data, say the scientists responsible for the research, and the drug's dangers have been greatly exaggerated.

I still can't believe that to be true.
In my younger days, after a good binge (2-3 days at a festival) on it it would take me a good few weeks before I felt fully normal again. It seems odd that the 'negative' after effects could be noticeable for weeks, but apparently leave no permanent changes.I always find that if taken in moderation, and still having a great time with it, I feel fine immediately after the comedown, but if I really go wild then I can't help believe, despite lack of apparent evidence, that I've been affecting my brain permanently.
Then again it may just have changed my conscious perception of things rather than the nuts and bolts.
I think it's quite irresponsible to suggest that ecstasy causes no brain damage, as they are referring to a pure form of MDMA, not what people buy on the street. Many of the chemicals found in street pills are known to have long term effects to the brain and the body.
- The article above is not true. They're actually promoting drug use because you will be more of a zombie and a FOLLOWER.********
- Its a tactic Government have used for a long time. Just a step above from the fluoride in the water********

I think the short term after effects (tiredness, apathy etc) are from serotonin depletion in the brain. Since that's how MDMA works, it triggers the release of larger than normal amounts of serotonin in one go. But feeling apathetic for a few days isn't necessarily (or even likely) proof of any kind of permanent brain damage.

But as with anything that depletes something in your body and reduces function, with repeat use/exposure without allowing for recovery in the process, there are permanent effects such as susceptibility to damage there.
When I was 13 and took ecstasy one pill (got in with an older crowd...) would get me really high. That dose would still be able to get me high when I was 17 or 18, and I believe this is because I only did it very occasionally, so my body recovered and balanced it's serotonin well. Around 18/19 I went through a spell of a few months doing large amounts (2-3g) every other day or so, and I'd say that although I function perfectly now in my day-to-day, and I have no psychological issues, it has had a permanent effect on my brain. I'll need about 0.3g to feel a change of state.
Surely this threshold difference indicates that either my brain has changed the way it processes serotonin or that the neurons are less receptive, at least when put under unusual circumstances.
I can't go up against actual scientists on the matter but from personal experience, I think that my ecstasy use has had a permanent effect on the way my brain functions, even though it's only noticeable in unusual (getting fucked) situations.
I don't think ecstasy causes brain damage in the sense of losing brain function, but in a looser sense I believe it, with non-moderate use, leaves permanent changes.
I'm a big advocate for ecstasy and think it's really helped form my perspective of myself and the friendships I hold, but I really can't say that when abused it doesn't leave permanent effects, most likely neurocognitive deficit of serotonin receptors.

I did some drugs the other week. Such a strange experience after years and years of taking nothing more than an occasional drink. I don't miss it at all but i gotta say from about 1995 to 2001 I had a great time bending my brain and body.

reminds me of a funny story when I used to live in LA, me and my buddy used to snort our e, so one time were kickin it at this small rave in down town LA, my buddy who i called puff daddy because of his crazy collection of cars (long side story short, he put a fuckin body kit on his fuckin viper, dude was loaded) anyways,
says to me, "hey man, the e's still in our nose, you can taste it" as hes rubbing his nostril and licking it. to make this story short, 5 minutes later were both diggin deep into our noses and licking our fingers, I realize what the fuck were doing then look up to notice were in the entrance to this rave and everyone walking in is walking past and tripping off of the big mafia looking Chinese dude and me who are picking their noses and eating their boogers.- haha. wouldn't molly burn like shit?scarabin

"Recent research has analysed the link between the harmful effects of drugs relative to their current classification by law with some startling conclusions. Perhaps most startling of all is that alcohol, solvents and tobacco (all unclassified drugs) are rated more dangerous than ecstasy, 4-MTA and LSD (all class A drugs). If the current ABC system is retained, alcohol would be rated a class A drug and tobacco class B"
