They are building a new little skatepark 200m away from where I live. It looks quite nice already and I feel tempted to use it.
BUT... I am 45 years old now and the last time I skated a ramp was 30 years ago. Now, I would have the budget to buy a pretty decent board (much better than in my teenage years), but I don't even know what I have to consider (good ball-bearing for sure, but what else?).
So, what do you think? Is it too risky to try things out again? I mean, I would only ride around a little. I won't be jumping up rails and I can't even flip the board or anything. I need my arms and hands in order to earn money. Is it likely that I am breaking my bones at 45 trying out skateboard again?
Are any skaters here? What kind of board would you get?
- It's defo do-able, just don't think you can pull off all the tricks you did as a kid. :-)PhanLo
- I made that mistake a few years ago in Canada, nose slid a concrete platform and the board slipped away and I landed on my hip, was so sore I thought I might bePhanLo
- sick, but had to laugh it off and limp away.
Still a great feeling just rolling around though. :-)PhanLo - Ok, thinking of heading to the skateshop right now. You're never too old!SimonFFM
- There's a skater a bit older than me from my home town that still rips https://www.instagra…PhanLo
- Not too old! Just cruising around is the greatest feeling. Slams do hurt more as you get older, but a helmet and pads are totally acceptable.nocomply
- I'd go for a wider deck and truck combo for more stability. Maybe even an old school shape if that's your jam. They make plenty of them now.nocomply
- Larger and slightly softer wheels will make for a smoother ride too.nocomply
- Let your soul be your pilot :)********
- I'm 43, and just started skating again... I'm a *far cry* from where I used to be... my advice is...showpony
- just ride, don't go for crazy tricks... just not worth it. I go slow AF, and I'm fine with it. Get a wider board (like nocomply) noted...showpony
- last thought... I fell and it literally took me three weeks to not feel it, and I'm relatively in shape. I've embraced being not rad, haha. have fun!showpony
- Go for it dude. I tried to do this, and failed. Now I just collect reissue decks. I have reached my final form as a poser.DRIFTMONKEY
- Go to your local skate shop and ask for a new complete setup. The kid can hook you up with the hottest brands (deck, grip, trucks, bearings, and wheels.)brandonp
- *and be prepared for a level of soreness you haven't experienced in a while. I'm 43 and 20+ years of skating caught up to me in my late 30's. Arthritis sucks!brandonp
- I’m 41, never stopped skating street and park transitions. Broke all 3 bones in my left arm last summer falling palm first on a heel flipnb

- Brakeless in Seattle. Hill bombs are great, but I think I need to start riding parks because street hurts more than it used to.garbage
- Don’t ask me technical details. I trusted the sales guy. Yes, good idea, I‘ll use wrist protection from my inline skates. I only have an ugly bike helmet.SimonFFM
- The park will be nice. All new, not too high ramps and I can bypass the rails. 200m from home. I can ride when noone sees me.SimonFFM
- Helmet :)BH26

- Hey, thanks for all the comments. I will take it easy and be careful. Will show pics of the park. Surfing would be cool but I am far from the sea.SimonFFM
- P.S. Still waiting for my gravel bike. More than six months already. That’s why buying the skateboard felt fun, too. So easy to get.SimonFFM
- Definitely get yourself a helmet even for skating on the street.microkorg
- Ok, guys, I will consider buying one.SimonFFM
- A helmet for skating in the streets, that's totally out of context or are you 65 years old?********
- Get a GoPro for your helmet.CyBrainX
- I went to the shop and checked helmets. I have a bike helmet. Where's the difference? Will use it for when in the park for the beginning.SimonFFM
- Haha cool. I'm rhinking of buying a Globe 8" because I just bougt one for my son. It comes with a free lesson at a cool indoor skate park.stewart
- ^super cool! (Mine is a 8.125" whatever that means)SimonFFM
- Bike helmet is far better than nothing, but doesn't give you the same coverage around your head as a skating helmet. Especially in the back where you'd likely..nocomply
- need it the most.nocomply
- They're just built differently. Padded differently. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable skating gnarly terrain in a bike helmet.nocomply
- Soooo, how was your weekend skate sesh? Bloody palms and knees?misterhow
- The park is still under construction (was supposed to be finished in August). But I have fun on the street.SimonFFM
