Not a rip-off, but an homage? Five years ago I made this music video for the Grandaddy song Jed's Other Poem using an old 1979 Apple II computer.
Video here:And shortly afterwards I released the actual BASIC source code so anyone could have a go with it.
http://stewdio.org/jedThis morning this video was sitting in my YouTube in-box. Pretty cool, no? This guy really got some use out of my source code! I'm not sure how well it fits the Chameleons exactly (and it's totally done on an emulator rather than a real Apple II) but it's kind of fun anyway.

I'm not sure what the point was but here's someone else running the code on an Apple IIe emulator.

I suppose this guy just wanted a higher res version of the video? He's re-run the code (again on an emulator, not the real hardware) but didn't do much of a cropping job at the beginning / end. He's asking for ratings and comments but I'm not really sure what I'd be rating or commenting on besides the above; nothing new to the composition here.

Freaking awesome Stewdio! Such a beautiful and haunting track as well. It's up there with miner at the dial a view from the same album.

I'd love to see a collection of lyric-based videos that have to follow similar constraints: monospace majuscules, one color, no graphics, strict grid with no tweening, etc. Imagine a playlist of 10 or so videos like this; the challenge of trying to make yours look different than the rest while playing within the rules. Could make for a nice exhibition. Particularly if the songs are good and free drinks are available.
- lovely idea - could have each playing on a different vintage systemlukus_W

@lukus_W. Yea, maybe I can make a formal brief of it when this load of work is off my plate in late June. I don't think using a vintage system is necessary, as long as the tight constraints are held to. Vintage does make it nicer though: the constraints aren't imaginary rules but actual limitations of the device.

Wow man, I remember this. Still holds up, great work!

I watched the Chameleons video again. (See the initial post above.) Good stuff. I think the force is strong in this one.

Here's the actual Chameleons video. Unfortunately a bit out of sync, but oh so post-punk.
I think I could follow this up with some Modern English
And maybe backtrack with some Joy Division

I am still totally feeling the Chameleons. I highly encourage you to check out their track above.

Hey Stew,
I'd just like to say, in my humble opinion you have created the best music video of all time. I saw it first a few years back and I was in awe. Actually today has been a good day for video, with someone else posting my second fav... Unkle - rabbit in the headlights video.
But once again Stew, that is my benchmark for music videos. Truly awesome.

The music is boring as fuck, hate bands like this, but the animation is very cool.

I remember that video Stewdio - didn't know it was you. Will have to dig out my grandaddy cds this weekend. And my Chameleons Script of the Bridge cd.

Thanks guys :) Very sweet of you.

I had asked Panic Software to play with the Jed code. And they did :) Even though they're super busy with the recent Transmit launch and all. Very sweet guys. Here's their blog post and video of them running the source code on their Apple //e in the Panic Software office : http://www.panic.com/blog/2010/0…

I realize I didn't do a great job of visually branding this as being on the Panic Blog ;)
