this is one of those funny things in this career that interest me greatly, but effect me little....
I do the creative here at my office, and work with a fairly small but cool group of developers..none of which is particularly fond of Flash, but a few are quite good at it...
most of the time, the developers here would rather us Jquery or some other tool along with good ol CSS etc..that said, i just don't care either way.... to me it sort of makes sense that apple would protect it's store and it's turf in any way they saw fit....
i also see how much of a screw job it is to adobe....although in many ways i think adobe had it coming....they've become just a tad to complacent ....they're software one way or another is largely responsible for pretty much the entire web..(i'm talking photoshop mostly here but you get it) they have a huge following with flash, and i think they've been sort of resting on their laurels....some one posted either here or elsewhere that they could imagine Jobs waiting and waiting for adobe to get its act together and fix flash for the mac etc....fix performance and a host of other things etc...waiting, waiting....adobe's all 'yeah, we'll get to that some quarter down the road' sort of thing...
finally steve loses his fucking mind, drops 50 pounds, almost dies, comes back (almost from the dead) filled with rage and vows in a secret meeting to destroy Adobe, no matter the cost....
or, you know...something like that.....

Nice story.

You know what I just realized? This thread would be completely incomprehensible for any of us just like 12 or 15 years ago. It would just be complete gibberish.

After reading a few (less angry) run downs on this, I think y'all are being too hard on Apple here. Yes they are dicks in doing it this way but it's pretty silly to think Adobe was building this "export to iPhone/Pad" feature with altruistic intentions.
Let's give Apple some credit after all, they are the one company that has put billions into designing and building next generation machines and UIs that set the bar for the whole industry. And Adobe wants to instantly jump in and become the de facto gatekeeper for Apple's mobile device software.
Of course Apple has the right to say no. From Apple's point of view it's a no brainer - they retain control of their software development, and don't really lose anything at all in the short term. I get the sense Apple doesn't really give a fuck about bringing tens of thousands of new apps on board. If it turns out to be the wrong decision, then Adobe will be even better positioned in the long term, since they will be able to develop better relationships with Apple's rivals.
- Apple have fucked up -> they deserve everything they get until they make it right again.********

'And Adobe wants to instantly jump in and become the de facto gatekeeper for Apple's mobile device software.'
What the hell are you talking about? They (Adobe) were just offering a feature to AS devs so they can port their app to iPhone. Apple said no to AS when they built iPhone, iTouch, iPad, so Adobe took some initiative and developed an automated feature that converts AS to an Apple acceptable format.. until Apple changed their format fucking four days before Adobe launched the feature.
Maybe it would have been nice if Apple told Adobe 'no' a fucking year ago when they announced they were developing this feature. I'm sure you'd love it if you designed a brochure for a company and at the last minute they said 'Sorry, we're going to do it inhouse' never to be heard from again. I'm sure you'd have an altruistic and positive view of them for wanting to retain their brand identity by doing the project from within, nevermind that you just got fucked.
Of course it's Apples call how they want the apps built that they sell in their own store, to be used on their own devices - but don't you think that they're being greedy, snotty little cunts when they pull this shit 4 days before Adobe rolls out a product. It's bullshit pure and simple.

"greedy, snotty little cunts"
i think you summed up a ton of companies there. lol.

Who has stronger and more voiced fanboys, Apple or Adobe?
Judging by this forum I say Apple. (btw you people are nuts, you). So in total, Apple takes a rap from you guys for being jerks then things will get back to normal.

I heard something the other day about the UN or someone wanting to ban flashy tv graphics. I wonder if this is connected? Has anyone read the internet bill they just passed over in the UK?
I don't even know how they can say that since HD is now on the market.
I was looking for a source but can't find it so at this point its a rumor.

You're making it sound like Apple contracted out to Adobe to build the Flash to iPhone converter with that brochure analogy. When in fact there wasn't any coordination between the two at all.
I mean listen, if I build software that outputs an Adobe format in a way that would be disruptive to their business model, what would they do? Are they under some kind of legal or moral obligation to support it? Not at all, and in fact when Microsoft originally tried to add the ability to "Save As PDF" in Office, Adobe sued them, forcing Microsoft to withdraw that feature.

Lil bit of hypocrisy/ irony there, huh? Not to bash Adobe of course, I like Adobe and use their software everyday. But based on early accounts the iPhone exporter was gonna be a major headache anyway in terms of producing stable performance on the iPhone, and, hey if you really want to dev an iPhone app so bad you can always just write it in C++, which is a cross-platform language. Or even comp it up in Flash and then hire a developer to rewrite it in C++. At the end of the day, an app is a fairly major undertaking, it's not like you're gonna be churning out five apps a day just because you have Flash and an export button.

maybe apple is planning to release their own creative suite...

they already have apperture, but it is no Photoshop.

Jobs cited that same blog post here -> http://www.taoeffect.com/blog/20…--
No matter how clever Steve's rhetoric - he's trying to restrict freedom and moderate the behaviour of developers.
If Steve Jobs was really worried about quality, he could examine the end product and make a judgement based on the final quality of each app in question.
This is a strategic business decision and he's treating developers like pawns. Potentially this move has the ability to stifle innovation.
- Jobs runs a business and protects it from being controlled by other companies. You want to make iPhone apps?...raf
- ...use tools provided. Period.raf
- Bullshit.********
- The man is behaving like a socialist dictator.********
- It's not just Flash that he's outlawed - he's outlawed _ALL_ other cross-compilers.********
- What about Adobe and the PDF example? All companies do this.ukit

if i was adobe i would build their apps for linux to affect apple's bullying stance. It would give me an genuine alternative to OSX and I could imagine many people jumping over
- Adobe should do that for sure.********
- they should also concentrate on Android********
- Oh yeah I can really imagine thatukit
- Adobe should do that for sure.
