Apple's iAd, inside iPhones and iPod Touch will offer advertisers a dedicated medium, able to take over the interface from within an app.
Ostensibly, this will allow app creators to support otherwise free apps. Or, you could just stick them anywhere, anytime.
Apple hopes to, in the medium term, to be providing 1 billion impressions a day, from which it will keep 40% revenues.

I was keen to keep my tone neutral, so as to see people's reaction.

Heh, I was going to start a thread about this.
I think the new platform is great and actually excited to start to learn something other than Flash. I've always liked the new CSS stuff that's been coming out, just wasn't really interested in building sites with it. It really brings the ad environment to a whole new level.
The demos Apple showed were basically full fledged microsites within an ad. The user never has to leave the app. And location-based advertising is a HUGE plus. It has the possibility to be Minority Report-ish.
Time to start brushing up on my HTML 5/ CSS skills.
The real question is whether or not companies will pay ad agencies to build these kinds of widgets inside of an ad. That's a lot of work to put into an ad that I find hard to believe would have as many impressions as an ad that's directly in a site rather than in an app.
