Upload site help

I need to build a super simple upload site for some old fogies to use on my webserver. Just a blank page with a Browse, Submit button, and loading bar. Trouble is that I am code illiterate. I toyed around with php tutorials this weekend, looked into jQuery as well and almost got it working (the files load, but do not stick to a redirected folder). I'm also not quite sure if I am adjusting my size and file limits correctly as the page will be for uploading quicktime files up to 1Gb. The site is not business related in any way (read $0 budget), just to collect assets for a design talk. Solutions like yousendit/rapidshare are over their heads. Giving them ftp info is over their head and I do not want each person to see what else has already been uploaded by others. I will be clearing off the folder as the files come in for the most part.
Uploadify seemed like a perfect solution, but still can't get it working quite right.
I'm basically asking if any code wizards could donate a few minutes today to help or if someone knows of a template or tutorial that is as simple as me downloading some files to upload to my server. I would be indebted to you forever for this favor.
Thank you!

I did just this once, for a friend, for free, but it never worked 100%.
all in pearl. in my experience, a nightmare to do. i'd send you the files if it was solid. best of luck.

Can you have them use an FTP client with a simple folder and password?

wetransfer.com is pretty much idiot-proof

1GB is a lot of space to upload via web.

1Gb is just to be safe. Hopefully people know how to compress their files to under 100Mb, but I could see someone trying to up a giant one by mistake. The fact that dreamhost wouldn't be able to handle it anyways is good to know.

Get them to use dropbox.com .. they can even install the application and have an extra 'drive' where they can drag and drop files. All files are kept in the same location - 2GB space.

Not sure if Dreamhost necessarily wouldn't be able to handle it, but you might need to ask them or manually change the setting yourself. Most hosts set the default limit for uploads below 10MB. This is controlled in the php.ini file on your server.

Don't bother doing this yourself. Seems like it'll be more trouble than it's worth and if you're no coder and have no budget then all the much more so. Look at Dropbox or Drop.io or the million other file sharing sites out there.

If your time is worth more than $10/hour, you should outsource this, as you will become a tech support weenie for people-who-don't-get-it... and/or be asked to add features,etc.... and re-invent wheels....
BUT if you're a bored IT department geek who needs to make sure you never get laid off, then by all means, make this as complicated and weird as possible and spend lots of time explaining it to weirdos and having lots of meetings... you'll become invaluable to the organisation's idiots....

Ok, so this pretty much seems like a rabbit hole of headaches that I do not want. Dropbox would required each person downloading the app and everyone sharing the same space, therefore being able to look at the files there, so I'm not sure it sounds ideal. That wetransfer site might be my best idiot-proof option.

beyond memory, there is also the issue of execution time with dreamhost- they'll kill a process if it's taking minutes to execute. you might also run into mod_security request limit problems

If they can't figure out that WeTransfer site, you'd have to question their intelligence not just w/ computers, but on a basic level.

ok, im going the WeTransfer route. Thank you everyone for the tips and info on this!

Usually, php has size limits of 4 or 8Mb.
You should think about using some java ftp client.
I did it once, and worked.
Try googling "webFtp" or "Java ftp applet".
