http://www.creemore.com/Possibly moving 1.75 hours north of Toronto to the community/town of Creemore (the brewery is their).
Thoughts on being able to thrive several hours outside of a cultural hub like Toronto, Ontario?
Anyone in a similar situation?!
Looking for property, less population, fresh air and a well maintained city/community...
Much love...

I live in Burlington, but I commute on the Go. Which sounds horrible... but I love the train most days. I use the time to sketch, discover Albums (cos you can listen to one in full!) and have time to myself. With a two year old at home I also catch up on lost sleep!
Burlington (south of the highway) is beautiful and surprisingly affordable. And I love it there. I'd say go for it. Not hearing traffic at nighttime improves your life tenfold!
- Yeah dude; I like being an outsider looking into the city rather than vice versa...ideaist

Everyone I work with in downtown Toronto is from the 905. That's why the GO exists.

Creemore is good beer. I had a friend who lived in Creemore and commuted to TO. She liked it, but said the winter was really isolating. She had no friends living nearby and couldn't visit anyone. She quit the place after a year.
- yeah; so she did it solo huh? freelanced from Creemore and commuted weekly? daily?! 1.75 hours...ideaist

i grew up in Peterborough Ontario....about 1.5 hours north east of Toronto...
came to Toronto when I was 18 to go to college....Peterborough was just about the best place i can think of to grow up...I lived out in the countryside, small neighbourhood surrounded by farms etc....near a lake....pretty close to as ideal a childhood as you can get...
I often think it would have been nice to settle down there once i got married, but the truth is, that Nafta (free trade etc) killed my hometown....Peterborough is a shadow of what it once was....in the 60's 70's and 80's, it was a boom town, with lots going on...it's got a pretty excellent university, a thriving culture etc.....but free trade destroyed a lot of what was once great there.....it's become a retirement community now.....
that said..in the past few years, I've noticed it quietly becoming something great again....i think a lot of university grads from Trent U, seem to settle there .....there's been a resurgence of arts and cafes and a bit of a nightlife....it's nice to see things like that happen to your hometown....
My family and I live in Mississauga now, and we only get back to my hometown about 3 or 4 times a year...but if small town living/lakes/excellent cafe's and a not too bad commute is what you're after, i would recommend Peterborough....
amazing place...
plus, Moondance Records is there....best and coolest music store in the known universe....
(well..it was until itunes and downloading in general sort of gutted the market / need for music stores lol.....
- Great words here; thanks exador1. I'm from Chatham originally which is (sadly) dead to the world...ideaist
- Small town Ontario (and in general) have suffered; my goal is to inverse this trend... Take power out of the city...ideaist

Toronto is one of the most interesting, young, diverse and dynamic cities in north America. i say stay and enjoy it.
creemore might be nice now, but what will it be like if (when) Toronto's miles and miles of cul du sac's and developer projects catch up to it?

It will be a much slow pace. Don't expect to go anywhere with your career. Its more a place of retirement.
- He can still easily work out of and for GTA businesses. Lots of opportunities not to be onsite every day.ETM
- Yea you can. It all depends what your going for. If you really want to be connect to the "seen" or whatever you want to call it. You got to live it.Claymantis
- call it. You got to live it.
Claymantis - i have lost interest in the "scene" as it created selfishness and lacks humanity... ; )ideaist
- I know what your sayin'.
But if you want to get real man. Travel 12 hours north and live in a cabin with no electricity. And just watch nature unfold.Claymantis - yeah; that would be less of a compromise, but location definitely is key and city access is huge...ideaist
- ...even once a month for a few days; my extended entourage will still be in Toronto so I got places to stay...ideaist
- "Off the grid" 'n shit... That's for retirement... maybe in my late 40's... Grow dope and cycle the land...ideaist
- hahaha. Shit.
Its all what you make of it. In any situation there is some kind of happy medium.Claymantis

This is thread is awesome its bring out all the small town geeks, like myself.

I realized coming from a small town, I had much more alone time to figure out who I really was. Rather than being distracted by the marketed world. Through this, I feel I have a better connection to my creativity.

I'll move to the country when real estate has gone apeshit enough that i can sell my house and buy a big country house and a lake. i figure 4 more years...
Some cool advantages of living in the country*, but i couldnt do it as I love the offerings of a big city.
* like swimming in a lake every day.
- Interaction with nature is what is truly lacking in the city; humanity has lost it's nature...ideaist
- This is why I MUST leave... & i like swimming in a lake every day... fresh air... fresh water...ideaist

The only time I've ever been to Creemore was a hockey tournament when I was 11, Mikey. The old man dropped me off, gave me $20 for lunch and was off to the brewery with most of the other dad's. We lost our first two games and were out of the tourney. Sat for 4hrs waiting for a ride and I VOWED NEVER TO RETURN!!!
You'll miss the city, I guarantee it. You've got access to an amazing cottage on a kickass lake every weekend, what is better than that?
Buy a condo, then commute up to the cottage every weekend, homie. That's the dream, right there.

from Penetanguishene Ontario originally myself. That really doesn't add anything to this conversation.. i just wanted to be in on the small town Ontario party.
Creemore is nice
- Amicus0
Can I join the party?
I lived in Barrie, Ontario for a year when I was 15. Innisdale High was great for an Aussie.
