I do it for the massive heaps of cash.

I do it for my fans.

As soon as I have the funding i'm opening up a greenhouse. The most rewarding work ever.

I'm concerned that I rarely see designers over 45
- that's because by then they can play the political game and become Directorsflashbender
- I hear you on that one...necromation

maybe it's time for a change.
i left the design world years ago, mostly because i sucked, but i also realized my heart wasn't in it. love what i do now, but somedays i wonder if swinging a hammer and building things that were real would be a nice change.

i do this because:
• i enjoy solving problems with many factors
• i enjoy the psychology of advertising
• sitting back and looking at something beautiful i've made is one of the greatest pleasures in life
• i'd be a painter but there's no money in it; in design i can support myself and enable a lifestyle other than "starving artist"
• the IQs of the people i work with in this industry are typically far above the norm
• i like making bulleted lists

- • I agree with all these points.
• Including the bullet list thing.mikotondria3 - this is a good bulleted listacrossthesea

If I dropped the big lottery win or something I wouldn't work. But I'd still do things creatively. All those projects I've scribbled about in my note books over the years that I've never had the time to really get my teeth into them.
Maybe I'd study a particular thing for a while and attempt to become world champion in that event/thing - a video game or a bar game. Something like that.

It's funny isn't...To most my mates they think that i'm the luckiest sod on the planet but when i try to explain that a job is just a job and that i too have bull shit days, they call me a cunt and reckon i'm just whinging for the sake of it.
- +1 I often say to them "You see a light on at 3am... it's me" Still... I love it.ItTango

I've known folks who shoveled shit for a living and were more than happy to do it...
... so if you find yourself 'complaining in your head' that you hate your job where you get to be creative etc... ... remember that there are happy shit shovelers out there...
... then get over yourself.

i do this because it's the only thing i've been solidly good at for any reasonable amount of time.... but i spend all day at my desk wishing i could go learn the other things i want to be good at.
i want to live in london and be an apprentice on savile row, or go to fashion school.... but it all seems so far away.

Thanks, for all the good replies... I i've been doing this seen '98 and turning 36 this month, it just makes you wonder.
It's good to see what drives my fellow creatives, and what keeps them going. Ultimately i LOVE what i do and has given me a good income and helped me travel and meet amazing people. I think at my age it seems that everbody moves into a directors position and become less hands on and that for me isn't cool... I have worked at so agencies and it true i have yet to meet a designer in there late 30's or early 40's.
I suppose i'll just keep plodding along till they put me out to pasture.

having a hobby as a real job is great for me about 50% of the time.
What isn't great is every one of my friends earning more than me because they are city boys or sell other crap. That sucks. And as Vitamins says, designers disappearing around the 40+ age really bothers me. It's almost unspoken, it seems you set up on your own, get a director role or get the fuck out!

I do this (front-end engineering) because i make money at it, and can't [yet] make money doing what i really want to do, which is photography.
i am not happy with my current career.

If someone told me at art collage in 1991 I would be sitting at a computer 90% of the time dealing with computer code and only spending 10% of my time, if that, designing and being creative I would have walked out of collage there and then and done something different.

It pays the bills. If I didn't have bills, I wouldn't do this.
