How do you make small talk?

I know that it usually depends on who you're talking to and how you've come to meet them, but I've recently started looking out for foolproof techniques to keep a conversation going.
I'm talking about that awkward silence that can come around at the end of regular pleasantries. I usually attempt something in the movie/music/news category but that only goes so far for some people. Sometimes when I feel like I'm the one doing all the work in a conversation I'll just start bringing up completely random questions or non-sequitors just to see how the person will react, or just walk away.

read the newspaper on a daily basis. It helps keep relevant topics in the conversation, AND if they don't know what ur talking about u just seem smarter.

small talk = stories no one gives a shit about , so I avoid it all together , unless someone is dying to hear about the strain of hash I just bought

I completely understand. I can't be that person who tells every person they meet about how much traffic they had coming in or whathaveyou.I often feel like the amount that the average person is expected to talk on a regular basis is very unequal to the amount of things there are to talk about.

If you have any history at all with them, just go with the standard "So what's new?"

Everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.

Talking just for the sake of talking is ridiculous. I will hear from people on a daily basis talking complete and utter nonsensical shit. Only talk when you have something relevant to say. Why be uncomfortable with silences? Why be insecure?

That just reminded me - I was talking to a guy in the pub on Sat night who was a repeater. Not only was he talking shite, he kept repeating his shite. This is worse.

You could try food chit chat (usually people have something to say about what they have been eating or want to try) or going down memory lane like stuff from your childhood that you may have been thinking about.

Act genuinely interested in what people have to say - bartending for years, I can talk about anything... just keep asking questions

I try to tell jokes mostly—oftentimes crude or tasteless ones. It makes people feel more intelligent and mature than me, which is not the case, but they get a good feeling about themselves after talking to me at least.
