Ooops, missed the end of the other iPhone4 thread.

One single observation. If I hold it in my hand like a PDA then I get the lowered signal strength (5 -> 3 bars). BUT if I use it to make calls then I actually hold it differently and *for me* it seems to work just fine with full signal.
Apple's response will be interesting, at the very least this is a major PR fuckup. Somewhere deep in the bowels of Jobs' lair some hapless (about to be ex-) employee must be undergoing some rather creative exit interview techniques.

From my personal observation, and probably in the subconscious of many people
1. Apple is trying to get as much money as possible from it's consumers. They charge $40 for a plastic case that costs 25cents to make. They make their products more susceptible to damage to get a repeat buy. There were days when people spent $40 for a walkman. Today, they are able to keep upgrading their mp3 players with new added features they intentionally held back on previous versions. So if you bought the first ipod, then the ipod nano, then a second ipod nano because the glass cracked, then the ipod touch, then add on the accessories and magical headphones, you're talking a total of in the hundreds.
2. Apple is teasing the fanatics who wants their products making them wait. Very very similar to dating.
3. They promote their products using blazing amazing ground breaking technical b.s. when in reality their computers aren't that much faster. Want proof, look for their youtube videos and how they exagerate the speed of a 250mghz computer.
4. Steve Jobs doesn't need to worry about money, so he has big goals. He's a salesman.
5. Apple gets a rise out of most people, positive or negative.
6. They make cool must have products.
7. People also buy their products as a status symbol, which really draws people in to spend the extra money.

From the other thread, but I think it should be in here, since this is the SNAFU thread, and not the i love my iphone thread.

Just tested my friends outside, same issue.
Unless they fix this through a firmware/software OS update, I'm gonna have to go with the Droid X. Glad I didn't pre-order this thing. I'm not going to put a piece of plastic on it to cover a functional design flaw. The phone shouldn't have been approved and released by QA with that type of problem.
- wait, you're complaining about design flaws and then running off to buy a motorolla product?kpl
- not sure whether this can be easily fixed via software update, its more of a design flaw.dorf
- maybe the firmware can create a silicon wrap out of thin air.airey
- I guess the update is you can't hold it a certain way. Oook.nthkl

Apparently it's the first phone in several years to use an external antenna, and probably the first ever where the antenna was intentionally touching someones hand while holding it.
Sounds entirely plausible they didn't notice this while making the thing (focusing more on the OS and wifi video calling I'd imagine), they're still quite new to the phone biz and were not in it when things like this would be well known things to avoid.
I'd say, hold off on buying a bumper because Apple will be sending them out for free soon.
- By plausible I don't mean it isn't a major Q/A fuck upPIZZA
