Is there some kind of adapter cable to use it off of the camera?

You can get this cable:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-You…You should definitely get the SB600. It's worth the extra money.

Go for the sb600 or 800, definately worth the extra money. The sb400 will provide limited usage.

The biggest advantage of the SB600 is the ability to 'bounce' light off the ceiling/walls/reflectors/etc.
What camera body do you have? Some of the Nikons have built-in wireless flash control for the SB600.

D90

^ And there is no wireless function on the SB400, you'd have to buy that expensive cable. It makes the cost of the SB600 even better.

Well... that's it then!
Thanks for the advice :)

might as well get a longer cord:
http://www.flashzebra.com/produc…alternative flash... cheap but pretty good, takes a while to order, yes, some people will diss it but it recycles very fast and is pretty good...

I have a D90 and shoot with an SB600 off-camera from time to time. It's pretty decent and the wireless "commander mode" is infra-red but doesn't always have to be perfect line-of-sight.
It's good, get one.
