Hey QBNers,
Heading over to LA at the end of September from Sydney. Having not been there before (aside from the airport), I'm looking for recommendations of the best places to stay in terms of:
- Location (heard West Hollywood is the best place to be?)
- Proximity to the best bars/clubs and attractions.

Have found these places, but any insights is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

what's your budget, and will you have a car?
i was just there this past weekend and took a recommendation to stay at The Avalon and enjoyed it quite a bit ($175/night +$30parking though). It sounds like you'd like to be a bit closer to the action and on the more affordable side of things though. Any of those Hostels you linked to should be interesting. There is one in SantaMonica near the promenade as well. http://www.hilosangeles.org/

Hey Douglas,
Budget is quite low... Probably wouldn't want to spend more than $70 a night (cheap I know).
Hostels are fine as long as me and my friend get private rooms. Have done the sharing dorm thing and it's pretty weak.
Thanks for your help, I'll check out hilosangeles.

Not sure what a good cheap alternative to the hostel would be here in LA, maybe a larger hotel downtown (like the bonaventure) through priceline you could find a deal. Santa Monica is good, beachy, tourist-friendly. Lots of restaurants and bars, not far from Venice, which is dirty and wilder. West HWood is nice as well (if that's what you are into ;-) ). Downtown might be a better place to visit than to stay, some good nightlife and food, might be a bit sketchy if you don't know the layout though. A car would be a good idea, but that will expand your budget. Good luck planning.
- here a good link if you need to rent a car. http://www.carrental…akrokdesign
- 8 of 10 times, cheapest to rent from lax. but it varies.akrokdesign

Do you have a budget for the whole trip? Or a per-day number you'd rather not exceed? There are many locations to recommend, but each for different reasons. You planning on hitting anything specific?
Santa Monica is good, if you're looking for a destination, or some place to be and not leave too much. But traffic getting out of there can be very unpredictable, so watch out for that.
- yeah. i drive there everyday. from downtown.akrokdesign
- it can take 15 mins, or 45 mins.akrokdesign

There's a nice design bookstore at the end of the 3rd street promenade. I forget the name, but you should check it out if you end up in Santa Monica.

I used this company last year when visiting my gf with some friends. We hired an amazing apartment with a huge roof terrace in the heart of Venice, inbetween the beach and Abbott and Kinney Boulevard. Great location and it was about $100 per person per night. Great alternative to hotel/hostel.
www.gosvh.com.- It was out of season, therefore at it's cheapest.goldieboy
