I just built myself a new computer to do 3D with (Quad-core AMD with nVidia GeForce graphics card and Windows 7 64-bit) and was wondering if anyone can recommend virus protection?
For all you Mac people: Please dont tell me that I should have got a Mac because they dont get viruses. This machine cost me $650, so I will deal with viruses thank you very much!

i use avg free, and it works fine.
don't get the free windows defender thing from microsoft. you can't change when it updates, and it tends to do so at 3pm - super-annoying as it slows down your machine right when you're working.

My friends from my old PC days speak wonders of Microsoft Security Essentials, they say that's all you need to keep your Windows installation secure:

ESET NOD is pretty freakin awesome and will never be a pain like AVG can become. Granted you have to pay for it, but it works, and it works well. I think I got 1 yr 3 computer licenses for $60

yep, nod32 is easiily the best (lookup the nod325 & nod327 website if you're feeling cheap. ;)
combine that with malwarebytes, and you're gtg.

my number one tip that people are shockingly unaware of is to run under a limited user account and create an admin account only for admin tasks, and disable the default admin account if it's been enabled. if your user account doesn't have privileges to do anything, you will severely limit any potential attack vectors. It can be a pain at times, but I've never been compromised in all of my years on windows.

Hmm, I'm buying my mom a Windurrs laptop for her birthday in a few months. I need to lock that shit down so she doesn't mess it up like she did with her desktop Dell.
So this thread may continue — for now.

The Avast free version has been good to me so far, but I've only been using it for a few months.
