OK, Hombre! Here's your chance to be Mr. Big Cheese Record Producer without even leaving home. Here's a track I'm working on in my home studio. I want feedback on it. What should I do next? Add guitars? Voices? Go louder? Softer? More of the same? Morph it into PsychoBilly? You call the shots!

maybe a melody or a bassline.

How about simple declarative statements, with some reasoning to back them up?
- pressplay0
play it backwards and speed it up four times

Hold on - are you the guy in the photo on stunningcreative.com?
I'd always had you down as a low twenty-something.
- acescence0
ok, it's boring. nothing happens. needs something to move it along. a bassline and a melody would help. some sort of development rather than repetition of the same elements with no variation.

These all sound like canned samples to me. Everything feels hollow, not only because it's digital, but because nothing even provides a glimmer of warmth to contrast the rest. A bassline and melody, as scarabin said would help as well. To me, it sounds like samples from a folder in ableton, or any other program with a midi sequencer, just arranged to sound "weird" by joe schmoe "weird" standards.

same guy with the out of date portfolio. lol

add legato strings to it to offset the harshness of the tones that are already present. Make sure it is a longer passage (8 measures before repeating, if not more). Have it begin 4 measures after the beat starts.
Also, cut down the amount of time you take to get to the beat. i'd cut measures 5 thru 8, and then cut right to the beat at measure 13.- Thanks for entering into the spirit of the thread! Have a wee squeeze!boobs

Well, that's a pretty clear brief. What about legato mute trumpet, a la late Miles Davis?
- the mute will create the same kind of cutting tones that are already therelocustsloth
- legato strings wouldn't have the edge that a mute trumpet would, which in turn would create contrastlocustsloth
- legato trumpet, unmuted might work, howeverlocustsloth
- of course, this is all IMHOlocustsloth

So, are you?
- Yes. That's lovable me in the photo on stunningcreative.net…...boobs
- huh. I never knew. Anyway - might want to check your nav - droplinks don't work (win7 ff3.6)detritus

The graphical equivalent of this noise would be a photo of a turd captioned with comic sans ran 20 times through a photo-copier.
And you want to add to it?
- You are OBVIOUSLY not a Big Cheese Record Producerlocustsloth
- I, on the other hand, am a 5 yr old 50 lbs lump of parmagano reggiano who gained sentience and started shitting vinyl discslocustsloth
- OK OK!! #yrs. 20 lbs. But i'm a talking, typing piece of aged dairy, FFS, gimme some creditlocustsloth
- BTW, i had the grater nightmare again. HORR-ifying. You have NO idealocustsloth
- the only thing it has going for it is a generic cr-78 beat and thats had all the character stripped by bad dynamics + eqkingsteven
- well, it should be easy to suggest things to make it better then, shouldn't it?locustsloth
- aside from "trash it and start over"locustsloth
- like 'add legato' strings?kingsteven
- got a better idea? Let's hear it.
BTW, t's not like he's actually trying to sell this or anything, it's just for funlocustsloth - okay, okay...kingsteven

Re: Legato strings: If you got the kronos quartet to play on what you have there, it would still sound terrible...
The sounds are more products of the processing you've subjected them too than they are original or interesting... it reeks of indecision.
The only thing of any note is the CR-78 (it's a very nostalgic sound)If you want to sort the mix, remove any dynamics processing and reverb from the drums/ add a keyed compressor to the long noise... replace the occasional 16th beat rhythm with something either more recognizable or melodic, remove the bit-shifter from the melodic drone... get a better reverb (i can hear the ~allpass - or you've time-stretched it but tried to cover it up?) or use a feedbacking tape delay or resonator to create a more interesting drone.
Then think about adding things...
- NOW you're talkin like a 30lb wheel of smoked gouda!!locustsloth
- BTW, what i was hearing in my head was actually a single violin. i misspoke when i wrote "strings"locustsloth

have you considered rewriting in with more of a flamenco twist..
or making it more soft cock 80's rock

Try doing something more adventurous than adding 3rd grade audio app SFX filtering to stock sound samples off a free CD. Despite the filtering, I can clearly hear the "Steam train blowing its whistle in a tunnel" and "Finger running round the rim of a wine glass" samples quite clearly for what they are.
Either that, or you could rename the track "Agatha Christie Dub"

boobs,
Do you run Stunning Creative as a full-time business or is it more of an after-hours endeavor for you?
I don't mean to insult but your probably the 10th company like yours that i've come across in Southeast MI claiming to perform graphic design services for companies while your portfolio / work samples clearly suggests that most of what you do is akin to desktop publishing - not actual 'web / graphic design'.
I can only think the way you stay in business is by completely lowballing any estimates / bids you put out there so that companies that aren't all the educated to how design can make their businesses more successul don't really understand what they're getting when they pay those ridiculously low sums.
Again, i'm not trying to insult anyone... i just find it curious that there is an obvious market that has created a need for companies like yours. And please don't say that what you do is web / graphic design. I'll fucking break something.

drgz, got any ideas to pass along?
