Playing Jr. A hockey made me learn how to fight quick. I saw some pretty brutal situations back then...

Like cbass99, I grew up playing hockey at an competitive level, fighting was part of the game and I happened to be one of the bigger guys on the team, so I always protected our scorer's when dudes tried to fuck with them. Was nice to not warm the bench every once in a while. ;-)
I've been in about 15-20 hockey fights and 3 street fights, mostly in my late teens, early 20's. Wouldn't think of throwing a fist these days. Got absolutely dealt with in a bar brawl, we were outnumbered 15 to 6 and I got cold cocked trying to help a mate who was getting his head smashed off a bicycle rack. Sat at home till 4am with a steak on my face, couple mates had to get stitched up as they were worse off.
One of the other crew dropped his wallet, so I grabbed it when we rushed outta there and when some of the meaner crew I ran with back then saw what happened they went to his house to have a chat with him. He wouldn't come outside, so they lit a shrub on fire and tossed his wallet in for good measure.

"All violence is behaviorally based. This is why what 99% of what martial arts teach is absolute bullshit"I see what your saying, but your completely wrong.
Your confusing what a martial teaches. If the purpose of a martial art was to teach someone to avoid conflict then you might be right, but thats not the case.Generally speaking martial arts teach people to fight (as well as a lifestyle and values etc etc but mostly to fight). So thats not bullshit plain and simple, it does what it intends to do.
If you want to learn behavioral science of fighting and conflict someone like Jeff Thompson may be of interest to you. He's written countless books on martial arts and has been voted one of the best instructors in the world.
His scenario street conflict teachings are immense, ive done a few of them and they are extremely practical and valuable.
If you had to learn from anyone about this stuff, its him.

as to the OP
Never been in a fight since primary school (primary school ends at 11). Had a couple of people start fights and ive just pushed them away and said the usual 'get the fuck away from me' shizzle.
The best time was when i guy who looked like ludracris walked up to me in a take away with a plastic fork in his hand ready to stab! got in my face and said "you call my mate a dickhead?" Was so bizarre. I managed to not laugh for a bit but then i couldnt help it.

I haven't been in a toe to toe brawl ever as an adult. But last winter I was out in NYC with a friend who was wasted. He was LOOKING for a fight and couldn't find one. Almost like that scene in Fight Club. We were outside a bar downtown and he starts calling this short guy "shorty". Then in Hell's Kitchen starts up calling this overweight guy "chubs".
Was interesting to see the reactions. The guys were like "what'd you say?" when they clearly heard him. They were just so hesitant to throw fists. Which is understandable.
Being the more sober one, my role would've been to squash anything before it started. But my friend clearly deserved to take a punch to the face.
That said, I am fascinated with ordinary everyday street fights.
And I will say that the youtube street fight vids from the UK seem to be a lot better than they US. Is boxing taught in any phys ed classes over there?- There aren't a lot of fist fights in NYC because things escilate and people are afraid to get shot... or sued. Try that noise in a hick town.BK

^ha really? UK street fights are better?
i hadnt noticed to be honest dude. No they dont teach boxing in schools, but boxing gyms are very accessible, so maybe thats why. Interesting to know.
Yeh your mate deserved a punch for shouting abuse, but it puts you in that awful position of wanting to loyally defend him, even if he is completely in the wrong. Sounds like you would have done the right thing (tell him to stop being a tool before he got beat on).
