How do you create a grid for print? Do you do it automatically using 'Create Guides', specifying the columns rows and gutter size? Do you ever make one manually?

just pull from the ruler.

I use both the Create Guides and rulers depending on what I need. The Create Guides is really handy though.

Rough it out in blocks, like a sketch, than 'create guides/grid' around that.

Once you know how many columns you want, go into Layout > Margins and Columns and play around

Toss in horizontals and extra verticals from the ruler (hold shift) like akrok saidmonospaced

I do math on the page size / margins, then calculate rough column width w/ gutters, then I use "create guides" based on those calculations.
- It does that automatically when you create a new document, though. Or I'm not following.monospaced
- What do you mean? I mean that I figure out my proportions based on the rhythm and copy / images used.brains
- In which, if you create guides and "snap to margins" they can be slightly imprecise.brains

Do you find that you use the same grid a lot, or do you make new ones depending on the design?
