I have a self-emplaced embargo on playing this game.
EVERY time I stupidly load it up, BAM! goes 8 hours, easily. I mean, I'm half-doing other things too, but it's there, on the bigger screen, coyly lifting up a suspender, entreating me to toy, to fix—to just 'try that one thing'.
Last weekend—I spent hours, literally clusters of entire hours, growing forests, inadvertantly burning them down again (fucking flint - fuck you, flint), then growing them back up.
Then the forests grow tall, so I have add lights higher up, to stop mob spawning over my base - the the trees grow more, so I have to add more lights, then... BAM! ad nauseum.
And of course, just when you've got your modern glass-roofed subterranean complex finished, when it reaches aesthetic affinity with the tree canopy warren complex—IN COMES FLINT! and burns it all off again. BAM! another hour or so to fix.
My Nether experiences thusfar have been a bit weak though - every portal I've made drops me in nigh-on solid rock—no Ghasts, no Zombie Pigs, nuttin' :(

Anyone know how to set up an online MP server?
We could have a QBN-o-sphere! (Oh, imagine teh greefs)

Lol detritus!!!
I'm pleased to see the level of commitment / addiction some qbners have to this game, nether world portals, fugged with his diamond pic axe. I'm a bit of a hardcore pc fps shooter and sometimes feel alone in these boards with my levels of geekiness. But not now!!

A multiplayer Qbn server would be immense.
I mean who else could rival the cool stuff multi disciplinerian designers could build with our obsessive perfectionism!!

"our obsessive perfectionism!! "
Heh, I was going to post a pic of my current project, but remembered I haven't yet made the periphery blend in to the landscape - I've still got the brutal, clumsy lines of burning, protective (occasionally self-conflagatory...) Netherstone around the periphery, still got hard lines around where I delineated the extent of my base.
Once I've fucked up another night's sleep this week sometime, I'll give it a post :)
godfuck, I'm in my fucking thirties for crissakes.
- haha thats the perfectionism im talking about! good man!Hombre_Lobo_2
- i even find myself looking at architecture on g.images for inspiration! lolHombre_Lobo_2

Im immune to addicting games

Actually—anyone care to confirm?
I swear that trees continue growing if you amend the light conditions around them, but the wiki says not. It says they only have the initial growth spurt... but I'm sure that's not how it works. I've been growing trees clusters, then adding lights up above, to which the canopy height increases, to which I add more lights... lala - perhaps it's just previously-unsprouted saplings growing massively in one spurt, but.. hmm. I dunno. Anyone?

I really can't wait 'til they make this MP in a mano-a-mano sense.
The conflict aspect needs upping—must say I was disappointed when Notch toned down the overspawning glitch that appeared in the Hallo'ween update. I was quite enjoying the borderline panic of finding hordes of bastard arrow-hoying skeletons spawning in my base.
It suffers from being a little 'easy' in parts.
Not that that appears to prevent a barrier to further hours of total time wastage in the latelate.
- ffs, I'm not even playing it and i'm wasting time.detritus
- haha its sooooooo bad isnt it!Hombre_Lobo_2

the question is, are all you hardcore minecrafters mining your material or using the version with all materials already accessible??
im not sure how to play the version with all materials accessible and having no need to mine.
is that the infdev version?
- plash_two0
infdev version has better water dynamics but once you go online people tend to flood (then crash) the server.
beta has it so you have to collect all blocks and the water is much more controllable. For my Saturn 5, im not really "playing" the game in its original spec. (more of making models and whatnot) so i don't mind cheating and adding the blocks i need. mind you collecting enough oblivion would add a few weeks to the construction.
- thats what prompted my post, so much obsidian!
how do you get all the blocks without mining then?Hombre_Lobo_2

I just kept creating new worlds until I got a spawn spot close to lots of good raw materials. Then mine the shit out it.
I usually mine down create a sub base, and store stuff in chests there and then mine out from there and so on. then if I die in lava, I don't lose everything I've collected.
I usually scour a cave, then start mining out from there. Sort of in this pattern. Seems pretty efficient and covers a large area fairly quickly. I go through buttloads of stone axes. Save the iron and diamond ones for mining hard ores.

k, fuckit.
So here's the new world I started from the Hallo'ween update.
My subsurface lair, glass roof, waterfall wall at left and lava flow from tower (original thinking was to light the core of my central mine shaft)...
..and the other side.
Looking up through the glass roof, you can see the top of the tower and principal portal
And, looking down from on top of the glass roof, you can see right down to the very bottom (I decided to fill the bottom with lava).
Looking up the water lift to the top of the tower..
...and looking down the main shaft from the top of the tower..
Looking down upon the base—this is the view I don't like. Too artificial, so am going to get rid of all the straight edges and make it look a bit more organic.
I did have a clear path to fall from the topmost layer, into the waterfall wall, where there's a secret entrance to my base. Unfortunately, I need to trim the trees—I'm about to die here.
Entrance to tree-house section of base, from top floor of glass-roofed shaft.
The very bottom of the main shaft...
...and the view looking up.
A view of the whole base, from afar. Note the fire-breaks in the tree-line. Lessons learned :)
.
Not shown are the stupid-long tunnels branching out from midway down the shaft, nor the large halls or mini-bases in cavern systems. I like growing my base organically - makes it easier to find my bearings if I've 'grown up' around the development.
This is almost as bad as holiday snaps, isn't it? :)
- haha! you awesome mega geek :D
love it mate!
did you mine all that stuff too?Hombre_Lobo_2 - Aye—I don't really see the point in the non-alpha version. Actually, I can't say I see the point in Alpha either, but... :)detritus

seriously i'm almost afraid to try this thing out. i foresee locking myself in a closet with my laptop for days on end. sucking on a minecrack pipe like pooky.
