How the hell, do you escape it? I am realising how mediocre I am. I have brilliant ideas and dreams - but they just don't seem to happen.
Mediocrity is of course relative, but let's say in the context of work.

what are you trying to do that you're having trouble with?

You have to be brave enough to fail...

Say "I am a fucking genius" in the mirror every day. It works, whether you're drunk or sober.

Do what you love, love what you do, don't judge yourself by other people's standards - most people are aimless sheep who judge themselves by other people's standards and are forever caught in an hollow spiral of self-loathing mitigated by distraction or valuemass accretion (aka distraction).
And remember - you're nothing. Absoutely nothing. Just a quick-witted organic mass in a population of nearly 7 billion other directly-similar organic masses and a trillionfold population of other somewhat similar organic masses.
You have no right to happiness, no right to success and everything that is valuable to you exists entirely inside the kilogram of fatty proteins in your head.
Puts things in perspective a little you beautiful [unimportant] flower.

Only history will decide whether you are mediocre. You can't wake up one day and decide not to be mediocre, it takes a long time. Now that you've made a decision put plan "non-mediocre" into action. You do have a plan don't you? No? Shit, you might be mediocre.

extasy is one hell of a drug,
but the next day is always a downer

I have a photo mentor who kicked my ass Tuesday.... he told me I was playing it safe, that my work was getting too nice, smooth, and client-friendly.... if I wanted to get more good clients, I had to be willing to offend somebody, be willing to try shit, be willing to push things, even if art directors hire you for your knockout portfolio, then ask you do tone it down, you can always tone it down, but only a few people can tone it up....
Stop being afraid somebody won't like it.... be HAPPY when somebody is offended.... especially if they are mediocre themselves....
- great advice. safe is good for others for a limited time. and what is growth without pain?zenmasterfoo

I don't know anyone in creative, whether photographers or artists or web designers who feel at the top of their game. All have some feeling of being away from what they could be. That inner challenge - the feeling that someone else is doing something so much more creative than you. Being close to the idea in your mind, but not quite there yet..
You don't dip your toe in the pool forever. Once or twice is enough to know the water could be cold. After a time you just dive in, knowing you'll enjoy it regardless. Jump in. Enjoy living.
My advice for the day.

Blimey, thank you for your responses, especially detritus.
There are definitely some bad brain patterns I've developed that aren't in line with my real values.
Thanks guys.

nobody agrees on what is good anyway
- but there's bad, mediocre, good and great. If you're not even good .. then.. you're bad or mediocre..Mojo
