its called a follower...? the client can't think of something on their own they want it to be like what they've seen...?

tylerk is abosolutely right.
What your client is is a follower - not a leader. And it doesn't sound like they want to be a leader. Unless they have a personal revelation their subjective nature is always going to dictate what is 'better'.
You could back up your solution with comparative analysis and market research. Show them where their competition is at, how the current landscape 'looks' and where you want to position them. But it doesn't sound like you're getting paid for that.
- Well this would be the next step, and they might go for it and pay, but I'm sure still he wont like itAmbushstudio

It's called subjective envy of the competition.

sounds like he's art directing and set the bar to be unreachable by using something he already liked as the goal. of course it will fall short.
try leading him down a different direction where he's not pulling from existing stuff he finds.

Something I failed to say, is that the influence don't sell the same product, which made the job trickier, he wanted to sell computers with a fashion influence, BUT (this is awesome) using "real people" in a very sophisticated and contemporary way, that's cool but when he gets the final product he can't understand that the stuff HAS to look different so it's not a rip off and retarded...
